Born in Japan while his parents were stationed overseas, Griffin III spent part of his upbringing in Texas where his parents worked at Fort Hood.

His father, Robert Jr., was a psychological counselor who worked with soldiers returning home while his mother, Jacqueline, was an administrative specialist.
