As part of the NFL’s six-part Journeys series, Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon talks about being Haitian and the impact the Haiti earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, had on him.

Pierre Garcon is proud of his Haitian roots.

Often seen tweeting about the country, reminiscing on times spent there and even keeping the country’s flag in his locker at Redskins Park, Garcon carries his Haitian pride with him wherever he goes.

While the country doesn’t receive a lot of attention on the international stage, it did in early 2010 after a 7.0 earthquake shook the country’s capital city of Port-au-Prince.

At the time, Garcon was more than 1,600 miles away in Indianapolis preparing for an appearance in the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets.

Unable to get in touch with friends and family in the country, Garcon’s attention remained split between football and Haiti’s status.

“When I heard the news about the earthquake, I was actually in Indianapolis,” Garcon said. “Ever since then, it was just watching CNN and just trying to get information when it happened. It was already hard to get communication down in Haiti, because not everyone has a cell phone at that point.

“It was like back in the day, you just had to wait for somebody from over there tell you what’s going on.”

Eventually, connection was established.

“They reached my mom, my family, my sisters and let them know that they were OK. …I wasn’t just thinking about my family, I was thinking about everybody.”

Shoutout to all my Haitian people and everybody showing me love every weekend.

In the November/December 2013 edition of “Caribbean Beat,” Garcon talked about how being Haitian “makes me appreciate life.”

It shows me how to work extremely hard through difficult times, because that’s how we have dealt with life as a people. We came through tough times throughout history, and we survived. Being from Haiti gives me strength. As a football player, I never give up on anything or any task. I represent Haiti everywhere I go.

Despite spending his week off in the Sunshine State, Baker did watch the Thursday Night Football matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns.

While the Browns would ultimately win the game, part of Baker’s focus was on Bengals defensive end Devon Still and his daughter, Leah.

Leah has been fighting pediatric cancer.

Before and after the Redskins’ Monday Night Football victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, Baker wore Still’s No. 75 jersey.

The Bengals announced earlier this year that all proceeds from Still jerseys sold would be donated to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Cancer Care and  Research.
