FedExField plays host to many historic rivalry games for the Washington Redskins, but this weekend, the stadium will house one of the longest standing college football matchups – Notre Dame vs. Navy.
The game pits a Notre Dame team right in the thick of the first-ever college football playoff race vs. a Navy team that employs one of the most exciting offenses to watch.
Brian Kelly, head coach for Notre Dame, joined Larry Michael, Voice of the Redskins, to talk about the game.
Kelly admitted that it’s difficult to gameplan for such a dynamic offense, but that it’ll have the fans on the edge of their seat for the entire game.
“Not many people run the triple-option, and not many people get a chance to defend it in a very short week,” he said. “You get three days to defend something that really you don’t spend much time at all. You’re trying to defend spread offenses and power offenses, and then you get three days to go against a very, very disciplined group in Navy that’s been running this offense for so many years, that they run it better than you can defend it.”
While they play their home games in famed Notre Dame Stadium, Kelly knows that playing at FedExField will be an unforgettable moment for his players this weekend.
“I think for our kids playing in NFL venues, especially with such an iconic franchise like the Redskins, and then our Nation’s Capital and Washington, D.C, we have such a strong alumni following in the D.C. area, all those things come together when you talk about playing at Notre Dame, you get those unique opportunities,” he said. “This is a unique opportunity that our kids get a chance to play at FedExField.”
