Brian Baker’s coaching career began just a few miles north of FedExField at the University of Maryland, but his return to the Washington, D.C., area didn’t happen without several different moves across the country.

Each move, the first-year Washington Redskins outside linebackers coach said, has given him new perspectives on coaching and the game of football.

Between his final year with the Maryland coaching staff and becoming a member of Jay Gruden’s coaching staff, Baker had stints with Army, Georgia Tech, the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns.

Niles Paul Talks Growth At Tight End, Early 2014 Success

When Niles Paul made the transition from wide receiver — a position he played throughout college and even during his rookie season — to tight end, the fourth-year Washington Redskin knew that he had to make several adjustments.

Off the field, he had to change his diet, add a little more muscle and find a good playing weight.

“I had to put on a lot of weight, and at one in point in time, I felt like I put on too much weight,” he admitted. “It was about finding a comfortable weight where I was still big enough to be down in the trenches with those guys, but I’m still fast enough to where things can play to my advantage.”

On the field, he had to learn how to run effective inside routes and stop charging linebackers from getting to the quarterback.

“There’s a lot more inside routes,” he said. “I never played slot or anything like that. I was always an outside X-position receiver. Santana Moss and those guys will tell you themselves, when you move inside it’s a different world.”

His hard work and dedication to improvement each day has shown during the 2014 season, as he’s hauled in team highs in receptions (21) and receiving yards (313).
