This Day In History: Redskins Defeat Seahawks In Overtime

The Washington Redskins defeated the Seattle Seahawks by a final of 20-17 in overtime nine years ago today at FedExField:

In the victory, quarterback Mark Brunell threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Santana Moss and tight end Chris Cooley combined for 10 receptions for 148 yards.

In overtime, kicker Nick Novak nailed 39-yard field goal for the victory.

The Redskins and Seahawks, of course, will battle at FedExField once again on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

Washington-Seattle Matchup Includes Community Projects

The Week 5 matchup between the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks will go far beyond the gridiron.

For each Monday Night Football game played this season, the two competing markets (in this case Washington, D.C. and Seattle) will also have a matchup off the field based on community projects.

Through NFL Play 60 DonorsChoose.org, fans can vote on projects between the two teams’ markets. The project that receives more votes will be fully funded, while the second place project will receive 50 percent of requested funding.

For this week’s matchup, Capital City Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. and Beacon Hill International School in Seattle, WA. will square off.

Happy Birthday, Mark Rypien!

Washington Redskins legendary quarterback Mark Rypien is celebrating his 52nd birthday today!

Drafted by the Redskins in the 1986 NFL Draft, Rypien would play six seasons in Washington, throwing for nearly 16,000 yards and 101 touchdowns.

During a magnificent 1991 season that would end with the team’s third Super Bowl victory, Rypien started all 16 regular season games, throwing for 3,564 yards and 28 touchdowns.

In Super Bowl XXVI against the Buffalo Bills, Rypien would win MVP honors with a 292-yard, two-touchdown performance.

Social Media Recap: Seventh-Annual All Star Survivors Celebration

The seventh-annual All Stars Survivors Celebration took place Wednesday night at Redskins Park.

The event, which was hosted by Tanya Snyder – wife of Redskins owner Dan Snyder and NFL Breast Cancer Awareness Spokesperson – and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, featured 31 area women currently battling breast cancer, each of whom are representing one of the 31 days of October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
