The Redskins called heads on the opening kick, lands on tails. Buccaneers elect to receive.
Zach Hocker lining up for opening kickoff…Bucs take it out of the end zone and are tackled on the 17-yard line.
Buccaneers’ First Drive
Mike Glennon is the quarterback, but Bobby Rainey takes the ball for the first play of the drive. Trenton Robinson with the tackle. Rainey takes it again after the Bucs get a first down, but is swallowed up by a gaggle of Redskins rather quickly. Glennon tries to find wide receiver Louis Murphy Jr., but the defense doesn’t give them anything to work with. Incomplete, third down. On third down, Glennon finds Murphy Jr. for a first down, by cornerback Tracy Porter with the quick tackle to not allow any progression. On first down, Rainey loses one after Bacarri Rambo and others force him out of bounds before getting back to the line of scrimmage. Bucs called for holding, but Redskins decline after creating another negative play. Third down. Bucs try to catch the Redskins off guard with a run on third down, but Redskins sniffed it out quickly. Richard Crawford back deep…can gain only a few yards on the return.
Redskins’ First Drive
Leading the charge for the offense tonight is veteran quarterback Colt McCoy. The offense is starting from their own 12-yard line. First play of the drive is an Evan Royster run of two yards. McCoy rolls out and finds Aldrick Robinson for a FIRST DOWN! Gain of 14. 1st-and-10 from the 28-yard line. On second down, McCoy finds Robinson deep yet again, but the wideout couldn’t get two feet inbounds before catching the ball. Third down…McCoy finds Chris Thompson for a pass out of the backfield, but not enough for a first down.
Tress Way is back and he BOOMS a punt for 57 yards. The Bucs are pinned back deep in their own territory.
Buccaneers’ Second Drive
Running back Jeff Demps is gathered up at the line of scrimmage. Looks like linebacker Gabe Miller got a hand on him first. On second down, Clifton Geathers with a SACK! His second of the preseason. The Bucs can’t get anything generated on third down — at least in terms of flirting with moving the chains — and the Redskins punt team is in. Crawford returns it for nine yards.
Redskins’ Second Drive
McCoy finds tight end Logan Paulsen on first down for a gain of six. 3rd-and-4 from their own 48-yard line, and McCoy and rookie wide receiver Ryan Grant cannot connect. Way back in to punt…and it is fair caught at the nine-yard line by Solomon Patton.
Buccaneers’ Third Drive
Demps carries the ball for a short gain before a headfirst Trent Murphy takes him down. Chris Neild is down after second down. The Redskins will get an update soon on his status. On 2nd-and-7, quarterback Mike Kafka airmails a pass into the home bench. Third down. On third down, Kafka attempts to throw behind a receiver blanketed by rookie cornerback Bashaud Breeland. Incomplete and fourth down.
Redskins’ Third Drive
McCoy hits Grant on a beautiful pass on first down for a FIRST DOWN! Gain of 20 yards. On 2nd-and-10 at the 46-yard line, McCoy dumps off the ball to Royster for a gain of six yards. Third down…and McCoy hits a crossing Lee Doss for a FIRST DOWN! Thompson gets his first carry of the night and gains two yards. After being unable to connect with Robinson on second down, McCoy reads the defense to find a wide-open Thompson for a gain of seven yards. Just short of the chains, so Kai Forbath is on for a field goal attempt, and it is GOOD!
Redskins 3, Buccaneers 0
Buccaneers’ Fourth Drive
On first down, Gabe Miller gets a sack and strips the football. HE RECOVERS! Redskins will get the ball inside the red zone to start their fourth drive.
Redskins’ Fourth Drive
1st-and-goal…Thompson is taken down at the two-yard line. Fought his way through traffic.
End of the first quarter.
