Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden addressed the media for the last time before tomorrow’s preseason opener at FedExField vs. New England after the final joint practice between the two franchises.

The first-year head coach touched on some injury updates, the impact of the Patriots being in Richmond with the Redskins, his comfort level heading into his first game with the burgundy and gold and more.

Rookie Ryan Grant Impressing Coaches, Teammates

Strike the fact he was a fifth-round pick and has yet to experience game conditions in the NFL — Washington Redskins wide receiver Ryan Grant has wowed just about everyone during training camp.

But this isn’t the first time Grant has been a talking point thanks to his play.

It all started during his very first action with the Redskins at rookie minicamp in May.

“He plays like a 10-year veteran already,” remarked head coach Jay Gruden. “He’s very smooth. He understands route concepts. He understand depths and how important they are and how to set people up… Easy in and out of breaks, effortlessly.”

That calmness has carried over into July and August, as the former Tulane star appears at ease during each snap. It’s something quarterback Robert Griffin III has continually noticed.

Chris Baker Using Success To Give Back

He remembers it like it was yesterday. Chris Baker was lined-up as a nose tackle, and when his teammate cracked down on the left end, it left him with a clear path to Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Baker takes advantage of the breakdown in pass coverage and slams Cutler to the ground with his right arm.

An audible “pop” echoed. Baker recorded his first sack in style.

“I kind of threw him, then I started dancing. Then I looked back and saw he was on the ground,” Baker said. “But then [Cutler’s] back-up came in and played a pretty good game.”

Washington won the game 45-41.
