The Washington Redskins hosted a Military Appreciation Day at FedExField on Sunday for service members and their families as part of Redskins Salute, the team’s free, official military appreciation club.

Joining hundreds of service members and their families were current and former Redskins and the First Ladies of Football, performing a military-themed routine.

Sterling Brown, a U.S. Army member who has been in the medical field for 18 years and is a student at Uniform Services University, said he is happy that the team created Redskins Salute as a way to show support for the military.

“For the military in general and the Redskins, it gives the team the opportunity to show their appreciation for the men and women in uniform,” Brown said.  They protect freedom every day here and abroad and to give back for what they do and support their families is amazing.”

Rhonda Khillmon, an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard for nearly 30 years, echoed Brown’s sentiment.

“It’s been a great experience,” Khillmon explained of Military Appreciate Day. “It’s just fantastic that the Redskins have done this for the military. To come out to a great event like this and have the alumni here and free food and drinks—just awesome.”

Lieutenant Colonel Steve Wood, who has been on active duty since 1997, said Redskins Salute shows that those outside of the military care about their well-being.

“It’s really important that the Redskins are a part of that. A lot of military members are football fans and in this area a lot of Redskins fans.”

Signing autographs and talking with service members and their families were fullback Darrel Young, whose brother has served numerous tours overseas, linebacker Trent Murphy and former NFL MVP Mark Moseley.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to tour the stadium and enjoy live entertainment.
