The Women of Washington Redskins (WOW) hosted a football boot camp involving a series of drills and exercises throughout FedExField on Saturday.
Involving exercises that targeted major muscle groups throughout the body, Nike Trainer Deanna Jefferson and other trainers along with Redskins alumni Ken Harvey, Gary Clark and Ricky Ervins led a stretching routine before running the women through a rigorous boot camp-like workout.
After getting their bodies prepared for what was ahead, the WOW members were divided into three groups where they would spend 20 minutes either working out their abs in the Redskins’ locker room, running stadium stairs between sections 108 and 135 or going through a circuit activity at the Bud Light Party Pavilion.
“I picked the circuit series because we could rotate through different drills and use different equipment,” she explained. “I picked inside the stadium, because I knew people would love to workout inside the stadium so we used the stairs to do some plyometric work. And I knew that people would love to say they worked out in the Redskins locker room.”
Harvey helped instruct on proper planking form at the abs station, Clark led the way running stadium stairs and Ervins jumped rope during circuit drills.
While the three served as guides, Jefferson tinkered the boot camp’s main objective to assist women’s health and fitness.
“My specialty is women’s health,” she said. “I’ve always thought that health and fitness is important, because we as women are always worried about taking care of our families and other people before taking care of ourselves. My specialty in female fitness allows me to empower women and have them thinking about themselves first.
“If your health isn’t good then you can’t take care of your family. So it’s about getting out there and being active. Football may be a predominately men’s sport, but we took it and we translated it into something geared towards women.”
