Brian Orakpo Makes Appearance On NFL.com’s Indispensable List

Good height and upper-body build. … Plays with his hand down, but stands up at times. … Easily gets off blocks of offensive tackles to make a play in the hole. … Can also hold his ground well against larger tackles. … Has good backfield awareness, watching for misdirection, cutbacks and bootlegs. … Closes on the quarterback well and secures the tackle. …

That was Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo’s scouting report before being selected by the franchise in the 2009 NFL Draft.

39.5 sacks later and countless plays where his pressure has caused opposing quarterbacks to question their reasoning for playing the sport, it’s logical to place the grizzled Texan as one of the league’s most important defensive players.

Phillip Thomas Readying Himself For 2014 Season

Poised to make an impact early, Washington Redskins safety Phillip Thomas saw his rookie season end before the regular season even began.

In the team’s first preseason game last season vs. the Tennessee Titans, Thomas suffered a torn Lisfranc ligament that would sideline him for the entire season.

It was a tough blow for the rookie defensive back, one of three drafted by the organization during the 2013 NFL Draft, but with months of focused injury rehab over, Thomas is ready to influence wide receivers’ decisions to run a route his way once again.
