While the ball won’t be of the pigskin variety, FedExField will play host to a pair of entertaining soccer games on Saturday when Spain and El Salvador faceoff in a pre-World Cup matchup followed by D.C. United and the Columbus Crew squaring off in a marquee Major League Soccer tilt.

With Spain being the reigning World Cup champions and El Salvador always having a great turnout to games in the area, there’s only one place that could hold such skill and passion—FedExField.

Before you head out to Landover on Saturday, check out this brief history of the other football at the Home of the Washington Redskins.

In 1999, FedExField hosted several games of the Women’s World Cup, most notably a back-and-forth affair between the US Women’s National Team and Germany where the red, white and blue rebounded from a 2-1 deficit to win, 3-2.

D.C. United posted a pair of friendlies against European powers Chelsea F.C. and Real Madrid. The first was against Chelsea in 2005 and the second against Real Madrid in 2009.

In 2011, Manchester United and Barcelona took to the pitch of FedExField just two months after they battled in the UEFA Champions League Final for European supremacy.

Most recently, the US Men’s National Team and Brazil tangled in July 2012.
