Virginia Sen. Chap Petersen said he couldn’t believe his ears when he heard the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board had canceled the Washington Redskins’ six federal trademark registrations owned by the team last week.

Petersen, a Democrat who represents Fairfax, was among several bipartisan Virginia state legislators who, on Monday, announced the formation of the “Redskins Pride Caucus” in Richmond, Va., in support of the team.

“I’m proud to be a Redskins fan,” Petersen told the assembled media at the State Capitol building.

On Tuesday, Petersen was a guest on 106.7 The Fan, and he further explained his outrage at the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board’s decision, which is expected to be appealed by the team.

Here’s an excerpt of his conversation with Paulsen and Rouhier:

Up and down went the emotional roller coaster yesterday.

American eyes were on Brazil last night as the US Men’s National Team squared off with a Portuguese squad featuring reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner, given to the top male soccer player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo.

USA conceded an early goal, but fought their way back to tie the game on a beautiful goal by midfielder Jermaine Jones in the 64th-minute. Then in the 81st-minute, striker Clint Dempsey chested in what appeared to be the goal that confirmed a spot in the next round for the Americans.

The euphoria was short-lived as Portugal would score the latest goal in the history of group play.

Paying attention to the other football, here’s a glimpse of the emotion from Washington Redskins players:

Wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard’s return to the Washington Redskins comes at the perfect time.

A former player himself, Hilliard is a coach that players love to learn from and has the track recorded of proven success.

Already knowing the capabilities and dynamic play-making ability of Pierre Garcon, Santana Moss, Aldrick Robinson and Leonard Hankerson from a previous stint with the team during the 2012 season, Hilliard will also have the opportunity to work with DeSean Jackson, Andre Roberts and Ryan Grant this season as well.

With so many weapons at his disposal, Hilliard’s hoping to be “multiple and dynamic going forward.”
