On Sunday, Washington Redskins fan and Joe Gibbs Racing’s own, Denny Hamlin, took home his first victory of the season at Talladega Superspeedway.
Staving off a furious rush by several drivers as the checkered flag drew near, Hamlin crossed the finish line first and celebrated his victory on the tri-oval with the thee-time Super Bowl winning coach in Victory Lane.
Just eight days before assuring himself a spot in NASCAR’s postseason, Hamlin got the chance to meet current Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
It wasn’t the first time, however, that he got to snap a photo with a Redskin.
The two former Rookie of the Year winners in their perspective sports met last week at Richmond International Raceway (RIR), where Griffin III led the 43-car field to the green flag.
Hamlin, who always enjoys coming back to his home state of Virginia and racing at RIR, let the world know that he is not a bandwagon fan and does not jump ship based on the weekend’s racecourse site.
He’s bled burgundy and gold for as long as he can remember.
“I think there’s a picture of me in a Redskins helmet and a Redskins jersey, probably when I was about three years old,” Hamlin said during one of his TV interviews. “And my mom was taking a bunch of pictures and I was outside and I was kicking the ball around. I wanted to be the next great kicker.”
Hamlin joked that he “soon realized after” that he was not going to be the next Mark Moseley, but that the Redskins still remained a big part of his family.
Eight years after his front yard picture in Redskins gear, Hamlin took another memorable picture—with his future boss.
“For me it was a master plan and he wasn’t aware of it,” Hamlin joked. “But it was a master plan. I told him at that time, that I was going to drive for him one day. At that time I had just started in go-karts, and he gave me the ole pat on the head, kick in the butt.
“We took a picture, and that picture is in his office now.”
Twist of fate for Gibbs; lifelong plan for Hamlin.
Congrats once again on your 24th victory together, Denny and Joe!
