Where The Swag Lives

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 27, 2014 – 3:49 pm

Brian Orakpo entered the studio at Redskins Park positively dripping with swag. Don’t ask me my why style has liquid properties. It just does.

Fresh off signing a one-year franchise tender that would guarantee his position in Washington’s defense for 2014, Orakpo sat down with Tarik El-Bashir and Chris Wilson to tape This Week @ The Park on Thursday. He insisted he needed a microphone to amplify the “Barry White” voice he’s had since the third grade.

The linebacker’s cap read, “Don’t Trip.” His gold watch matched the chains around his neck and the zipper on his varsity jacket.

Orakpo said his streetwear was indicative of an attitude that starts in the linebacker corps.

“The linebackers are always responsible for where the swag comes from,” Orakpo said.

“We always play with a lot of confidence when we’re out there. The way we dress, the way we do things… you know we all have sense on swag.”

The pass-rusher was trying to explain where the spirit of the defense comes from and who would accept that mantle now that London Fletcher has seemingly retired.

If Orakpo plans to take on the iron man’s role as the hype man in the pregame huddle, he said he needs to clean up his language.

“I am not a rah-rah kind of guy,” Orakpo said. “You know if I do speak, I’m a little more X-rated, that’s the only thing. It’s hard for me to go out there and do speeches without me cussing a lot, so I’m going to try and get better at that. So we will see what happens.”

Fletcher was the indisputable leader of the linebackers, but Chris Baker might disagree with the notion of the swag coming from Orakpo’s group.
