Angela Rypien, daughter of former Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien, was named the “hottest” Legends Football League (formerly the Lingerie Football League) athlete of all time in a list unveiled by the league and TMZ Sports.
The field included 1,600 women throughout the sport’s three leagues in Australia, Canada and the U.S.
While this may seem like blatant click bait – Um, okay, it is – it’s also an opportunity to reflect on Rypien’s place in a growing sports league and how her father feels about it.
The younger Rypien made her LFL debut for the Seattle Mist in 2011 in a a 42-8 rout of the Green Bay Chill.
Mark Rypien, MVP of Super Bowl XXVI, told Yahoo! at the time the legitimacy of the game helped him deal with the spectacle of his daughter playing in a lingerie league.
“I think everybody that really gets on the field and watches the gals warm up — the ones that come there to support their team or to see what it’s all about, kind of get that, ‘Yeah, they’re out there in their bra and panties and they’re playing football,'” Mark said. “[But] once the first snap happens and they start smacking each other around, you lose sight of all of that and you’re looking at the technical aspects of the game.”
Last year Angela Rypien suited up for the Baltimore Charm, a franchise coached by her father’s former receiver, Gary Clark.
The Baltimore Sun caught up with father and daughter again, and Mark Rypien told the paper the league was a progressive opportunity for its athletes.
“Once I started looking at pictures of their gear and how they are dressed, as a father you are a little bit concerned,” he said. “But the league has given women something to dream about, something they weren’t able to do 20 years ago. It’s a great opportunity for these young ladies.”
Give this to the LFL. The league knows how to promote itself. This NFL Films-styled recap has the requisite score, a John Facenda impression and a redemption narrative.
The Charm won the Northeastern division with, but lost to the Philadelphia Passion in the playoffs. Angela Rypien battled for playing time with Morgan Spencer – who posted the highest passer rating in the league – and has since decided to return to the Mist.
In the meantime, she’s training her right arm.
