Shawn Lauvao Adds Power To O-Line

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 12, 2014 – 6:36 pm

Sophisticated weight lifting programs are ubiquitous on the high school football circuit, but I can’t imagine many teenagers training like Shawn Lauvao did.

The latest addition to Washington’s offensive line won the 2005 Hawaii Strongest Teen competition during his days at Farrington High School in Honolulu, where he was the Rivals.com No. 6 prospect in the state.

According to his Arizona State bio, the lineman could bench 420 pounds, squat 500 and power clean 300 coming out of high school. Read more »

The Poetry of Andre Roberts

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 12, 2014 – 6:28 pm

Basketball is often compared to jazz. The ball bouncing in time against the improvised flurry of the game creates a spontaneous pace. A run of sweet shots by a scorer liker Kevin Durant stands out like a dominant trumpet player doing his thing.

So what’s the conduit to football? Is it poetry with words sequentially ordered like a drive of well-designed plays? Or is it hip-hop with bold attitudes and big hits bumping like bass lines?

I’ll have to ask Andre Roberts. The latest addition to the Redskins receiving corps posts poetry to his Instagram and links to youtube highlights set to Drake verses on his Instagram.

Check out his moves.

Hayward Assigned 55, Other Roster Notes

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 12, 2014 – 5:14 pm

Nick Barnett

The Washington Redskins are taking the methodical approach to free agency, but the equipment guys are working overtime, doling out numbers to the new faces in town.

So far, the big news is that linebacker Adam Hayward will be wearing No. 55, for at least the offseason portion of the schedule. I emphasize that because there’s always a chance he changes his number for the regular season.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

For the record, No. 55 was last worn by linebacker Nick Barnett in 2013. Barnett is currently a free agent and will need to adjust his wardrobe if he returns.

Other offseason signings were also assigned numbers and are as follows: Read more »

Redskins Nation Always Wanted Riley Jr.

Posted by Brian Tinsman on March 12, 2014 – 1:03 pm

I still remember inside linebacker Perry Riley Jr.’s first start in the NFL, in Week 10 of the 2011 season.

It was an otherwise forgettable day for the Washington Redskins, as Rex Grossman was the surprise starting quarterback, thus ending the John Beck era. It was also a coming-out party for Leonard Hankerson, who caught six passes for 106 yards before tearing his labrum and missing the remainder of the season.

But for Riley Jr., it was the payoff for months of hard work, as he had developed from a raw rookie in 2010 into a valuable contributor and special teams stud in 2011.

After taking over for incumbent starter Rocky McIntosh in the second half of the previous two games, Riley Jr. was ready to get his shot in the starting lineup.

And he never looked back. Read more »

Orakpo Helps Kids Make Good Choices

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 12, 2014 – 12:19 pm

Brian Orakpo told the kids he needed to make a change.

In a video released by the Mid Atlantic Dairy Association, Orakpo told a group of schoolchildren why he decided to improve his diet by eliminating junk and emphasizing nutrient-rich foods like milk and yogurt. The linebacker is part of a Fuel Up to Play 60 initiative emphasizing the importance of a balanced breakfast.

“I used to be like you guys, eating all kinds of candies and chips and stuff, anything that was easy you know,” Orakpo said.

“I used to be like that, but I had to change the direction of my life if I wanted to be where I wanted to be, and that was playing professional football.”

Why Adam Hayward Returned To Football

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on March 12, 2014 – 11:46 am

Adam Hayward had a reason to smile Wednesday.

The free agent linebacker arrived at Redskins Park, completed a physical and signed his contract with his second NFL franchise. The 2014 season will be his eighth in professional football, but 10 years ago he almost gave up the game.

Hayward lost his mother to breast cancer while he played for Colorado State in 2004. Read more »
