The Seattle Seahawks proved the professional football tenet once again. Defense wins championships.
According to NFL Media analyst Elliot Harrison, every team in the NFC East should prioritize the defensive side of the ball once free agency opens Tuesday, March 11, at 4 p.m.
In 2013 the New York Giants ranked eighth in the NFL in total defense, Washington was 18th, Philadelphia was 29th and Dallas was the worst in the league. Every team in the division ranked in the bottom half of the league in scoring defense.
Although he’s bullish on the long-term prospects of 2013 fourth-round pick Phillip Thomas, Harrison thinks the Redskins need to target a safety.
“Improved safety play would provide defensive coordinatorJim Haslett the confidence to take some shots as a defensive play-caller, opening up the blitz package,” Harrison wrote.
Elsewhere around the division, the analyst sees the Eagles shoring up their secondary and the Giants going after a linebacker.
With Demarcus Ware’s return to Dallas not automatic and Jason Hatcher able to auction his services in free agency, Harrison wrote the Cowboys will look to boost the defensive line.
