Pillowy breakfast sponges for butter and maple syrup are delicious, but we’re celebrating a different type of pancakes today.

Franchise Tag Alters Free Agent Market

The news of the day in the NFL Monday was unquestionably how teams would manipulate the franchise tag before the 4 p.m. deadline.

The Redskins applied the tag to Brian Orakpo while other teams made decisions that could affect how Washington approaches free agency beginning a week from Tuesday.

RGIII, Hall, Baker Welcome Back Orakpo

Although the franchise tag is not a guarantee Brian Orakpo will return to the Redskins in 2014, it grants the Redskins control of his rights and allows the team more time to negotiate a long-term deal should Washington want to move in that direction.

Orakpo has taken the move in stride.

“They did what they had to do,” he told the Washington Post. “I’m just kind of glad we can at least make a step moving forward instead of being at a stalemate with this whole situation.”

The linebacker’s probable return was reason enough for his teammates to celebrate on Twitter. Read more »
