Redskins Fan Matthew McConaughey Wins Best Actor Oscar, Keeps On L-I-V-I-N

The Redskins’ most famous fans just keep on winning the offseason.

Matthew McConaughey, who has said he’s been a Redskins fan since he was 4 years old, won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role Sunday Night for his performance as Ron Woodruff in “Dallas Buyers Club.” He beat out an imposing field including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Dern and Christian Bale.

In an interview with County Line Magazine last December, McCanaughey said he did not dream of acting as a child.

“I thought I’d be a Washington Redskins running back. At 4 years old my favorite food was hamburgers and the Redskins had a linebacker, named Chris Hanburger. That made me fall in love with the team.”

Sunday’s honor was another reminder the actor pursued the correct career. The man who once played a lovable burnout named Wooderson has always always said, “alright alright alright” to whatever roles came his way, but his decision making in the past couple of years has spawned a fallow period since dubbed the “McConaissance.”

As Woodroof he was a man who refused to a die, an effervescent bull rider who contracted HIV and circumvented legal and geographic hurdles to extend his life and help others.

In the HBO Series “True Detective,” he plays Rust Cohle, a broken character so devoid of joy he denies the benefits of human consciousness.

Last night Esquire scribe Tom Chiarella wrote about how he’d written off McConaughey only to see him fulfill his ambitions as a serious actor. It would be nice to see the Redskins follow his lead with a bounce back season in 2014.

In the meantime, long live the McConaissance.

Congrats. For the Oscar…But mainly hanging in there being a Skins fan. Hanburger was a consistent and tough, take your head off predator on the field.
