By placing the franchise tag on Brian Orakpo, the Redskins assured the team rights to sign the most esteemed free agent at his position in 2014.
NFL Media dubbed Orakpo a tier one difference maker in a class of his own among linebackers. Evan Silva of Rotoworld named Orakpo his No. 5 impending free agent – tops among linebackers – and CBS Sports had him rated the third-best candidate for free agency.
After locking up DeAngelo Hall and Chris Baker, franchising Orakpo could create more continuity within a Washington defense led by Defensive Coordinator Jim Haslett. Both Haslett and new Outside Linebackers Coach Brian Baker have talked about taking the outside linebacker tandem of Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan to new heights.
If Orakpo and the team can proceed amicably, the move could keep an entrenched leader in the locker room to help fill the void created by London Fletcher’s absence. When healthy, the three-time Pro Bowler is one the NFL’s premiere pass rushers.
