You probably know Jay Gruden’s unorthodox journey to the NFL by now. You’ve heard of the success at Louisville and the feats in the Arena Football League.

Last week at the NFL Scouting Combine Larry Michael unlocked a piece of Gruden’s athletic history you wouldn’t know unless you went to elementary school in Bloomington, Ind., in the ’70s.

In an exclusive interview with Redskins.com, Gruden told Michael he was a “kickball stud” at Childs Elementary School while his dad, Jim, was a coach at the University of Indiana.  Read more »

Clowney Outruns Every QB But RGIII

Even if Jadeveon Clowney jogged through his final year at South Carolina, that’s plenty speedy.

The 6-foot-5, 266-pound defensive end blazed through the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds Monday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Clowney’s 40 was faster than every quarterback at the Combine this year, and according to ESPN Stats and Info, his unofficial time of 4.47 seconds was faster than every active NFL quarterback since 2006 except for Robert Griffin III. Read more »

Last week NFL Media draft expert Mike Mayock spent nearly three hours on a conference call breaking down the draft needs of every NFL team.

When he considered the Redskins, Mayock  predicted Washington would use it’s early second-round pick, which is actually No. 34, to bolster depth at wide receiver. Read more »

Combine Look Back: The Class of 2011

Although 40-yard dashes, broad jumps and bench press reps don’t really give us an idea of a prospect’s viability as a football player, the physical tests can give a glimpse at a man’s raw athletic potential and ability to thrive in a competitive atmosphere. Over the course of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, the Redskins blog will take a look back at how Washington’s past three draft classes fared in Indianapolis.

Gruden Gets Popcorn Ready For Williams

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 24, 2014 – 1:22 pm

I like to imagine Jay Gruden sitting in a velvet burgundy director’s chair – J.G. monogrammed in golden thread – and running through film of every Redskins snap from 2013 with nary a heavy eyelid.

But that has to get tedious even for a guy with 10 fires and few cans of Diet Coke in his belly. Enter Trent Williams.

In an exclusive interview with Redskins.com at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, Gruden told Larry Michael he has the pleasure of watching one of the NFL’s most entertaining linemen on tape. Read more »

I’ve been known to sketch, but my in no way are my skills on par with this child. I think this this fan drawing of Pierre Garçon from a few days ago is awesome, and the wide receiver agrees.

Good to see Pierre giving props.

Die-hard Redskins fan Dale Earnhardt Jr.  held a lucky talisman before he finally finished first in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The pilot of the No. 88 car won the Daytona 500 for the second time in his career Sunday night after finishing in second place for three of the past four races at the track. During a rain delay that lasted 6 hours 22 minutes, Earhardt’s road manager snapped a picture of the driver posing with Fred Stokes, who collected a sack and recovered a fumble in Super Bowl XXVI.

While enjoying the scene in his Redskins jersey, Stokes let Earnhardt hold his championship ring before “Junior” brought home his own jewelry. Read more »

‘Tis the season for unsubstantiated rumors in NFL circles. That sounds like a catchy jingle.

On Friday morning, general manager Bruce Allen dispelled one of those rumors at his session with the Washington media, inside room 301 at the J.W. Marriott in Indianapolis:

Redskins Kids Club Tackles Mini-Combine

While NFL prospects underwent a gauntlet of drills at the NFL Scouting Combine Saturday in Indianapolis, more than 100 members of the Washington Redskins Kids Club ran through a mini-combine at the team’s indoor practice facility in Loudoun County, Va.

Tight end Niles Paul waited at the 7-yard line with football in each hand and told his receiver to score. A girl in neon rainbow-colored leopard socks reached for Paul’s pass as she dove onto the cushy red mat in the end zone and completed the final stage of an obstacle course. Read more »
