Combine Look Back: The Class of 2011

Although 40-yard dashes, broad jumps and bench press reps don’t really give us an idea of a prospect’s viability as a football player, the physical tests can give a glimpse at a man’s raw athletic potential and ability to thrive in a competitive atmosphere. Over the course of the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine, the Redskins blog will take a look back at how Washington’s past three draft classes fared in Indianapolis.

Prospect: DL Ryan Kerrigan

 

Draft pick: First round (16th overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-4.71 second 40-yard dash
-31 reps on the bench press
-33.5 inch vertical jump
-Kerrigan’s 122.0 inch broad jump was the second-best among defensive line prospects at the 2011 Combine.
-7.18 second three-cone drill
-4.39 second 20-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Despite suffering a knee injury that would require offseason surgery, Kerrigan started all 16 games for the third consecutive year. He matched a career high with 8.5 sacks and ranked fifth on the Redskins with 83 tackles. Kerrigan’s 15 tackles for loss tied Brian Orakpo’s total for the team high.

 

Prospect: DL Jarvis Jenkins 

 

2013 performance: Jenkins started five games, made 34 tackles and collected two sacks.

Draft pick: Second round (41st overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-5.08 40-yard dash
-17 reps on the bench press
-26.5 inch vertical jump
-98.0 inch broad jump
-7.42 second three-cone drill
-483 second 20-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Jenkins started five games, made 34 tackles and collected two sacks.

 

Prospect: WR Leonard Hankerson 

 

Draft pick: Third round (79th overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-Hankerson’s 4.43 second 40-yard dash ranked fourth among wide receivers at the 2011 Combine.
-14 reps on the bench press
-36.0 inch vertical jump
-117.0 inch broad jump
-6.94 second three-cone drill
-4.21 second 20-yard shuttle
-11.37 second 60-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Hankerson started seven games and caught 30 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns before injuring his knee.

 

Prospect: RB Roy Helu Jr. 

Draft pick: Fourth round (105th overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-4.42 second 40-yard dash
-11 reps on the bench press
-36.5 inch vertical jump
-119.0 inch broad jump
-Helu’s 6.67 second three-cone drill was second-fastest among running backs at the 2011 Combine
-Helu’s 4.01 second 20-yard shuttle was the fastest at the 2011 Combine
-Helu’s 11.07 second 60-yard shuttle was the fastest at the 2011 Combine.

2013 performance: Helu was active for all 16 games and served as the team’s third-down back and hurry-up offense specialist. He rushed for 274 yards on 62 yards and set a career high with four touchdowns. He added 31 receptions for 251 yards.

 

Prospect: WR Niles Paul

 

Draft pick: Fifth round (155th overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-4.51 second 40-yard dash
-Paul’s 24 reps on the bench press were the second most among wide receiver prospects
-34.5 inch vertical jump
-117.0 inch broad jump
-6.90 three-cone drill
-4.14 second 20-yard shuttle
-11.75 second 60-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Since converting to tight end, Paul has become a dependable blocker and an essential member of Washington’s special teams units. Paul led Washington with 16 special teams tackles and  411 kick return yards. He started four games and caught four passes for 51 yards.

 

Prospect: RB Evan Royster

Draft pick: Sixth round (177th  overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-4.65 second 40-yard dash
-20 reps on the bench press.
-34.0 inch vertical jump
-113.0 inch broad jump
-7.07 three-cone drill
-4.18 second 20-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Royster was active for 10 games in 2013. The running back had two carries for zero yards, made one catch for three yards and compiled four special teams tackles.

 

Prospect: WR Aldrick Robinson

Draft pick: Sixth round (178th  overall)

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:
-Robinson’s 4.43 second 40-yard dash was tied with Hankerson for the fourth-best among receivers at the 2011 Combine
-17 reps on the bench press
-40.0 inch vertical jump
-126.0 inch broad jump
-6.65 three-cone drill
-4.09 second 20-yard shuttle
-Robinson’s 11.01 second 60-yard shuttle was the third-fastest among receivers at the 2011 Combine.

2013 performance: Robinson played in 16 games and caught 18 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns.

 

Prospect: DL Chris Neild

2011 NFL Scouting Combine Results:

-5.12 second 40-yard dash
-30 reps on the bench press
-29.0 inch vertical jump
-106.0 inch broad jump
-7.56 three-cone drill
-4.46 second 20-yard shuttle

2013 performance: Neild was active in eight games. He made 11 tackles and two tackles for loss.

 

*Fifth-round pick Dejon Gomes was waived in the final round of 2013 roster cuts.
*Seventh-round pick Brandyn Thompson was waived in the final round of 2012 roster cuts.
*Seventh-round pick Maurice Hurt started the 2013 season on the physically unable to perform list before moving to injured reserve.
*Seventh-round pick Markus White was waived in the final round of 2012 roster cuts, picked up by Tampa Bay for the practice squad, claimed back by Washington and waived again.

    He ran a 4.42

    Just looking at the workout of Jarvis Jenkins alone i shake my head at why we drafted him. We could’ve really waited later to go after a big 300lb lineman and could’ve used that pick on an O Lineman like Rodney Hudson
