How DeAngelo Hall Earned His Deal

DeAngelo Hall used two words to end the speculation.

In a tweet directed at Robert Griffin III on Tuesday, Hall wrote, “I’m BACK,” assuring his quarterback he would not depart in free agency.

Before announcing the news on Wednesday, the Washington Redskins confirmed the agreement with a picture of the defender signing his paperwork.

Hall played his high school ball in Chesapeake, Va., and matriculated at Virginia Tech. A contract with the Redskins ensures Hall will practice in his home state.

The playmaker’s performance in 2013 might have been the best argument for bringing him back.

According to the team’s statistics, Hall recorded four interceptions, was third on the club with 106 tackles and scored three defensive touchdowns. Each week he accepted the opponent’s toughest assignment, whether that meant matching up with physical receiver Dez Bryant against the Cowboys or bowing up against tight end Antonio Gates versus the Chargers.

Take a look back at  a five of Hall’s top plays from 2013, part of a body of work that persuaded decision makers at Redskins Park to keep the corner past his 30th birthday.

HALL INTERCEPTS TONY ROMO

Hall’s eyes are as impressive as any of his athletic features. Watch the cornerback backpedal in stride with Bryant while reading the quarterback and undercutting a comeback route for a pick.

HALL PRESSES ANTONIO GATES

On third-and-goal against the San Diego Chargers, Hall jammed the 6-foot-4, 255-pound tight end at the line of scrimmage, disrupting his timing and preventing him from catching a ball in the end zone. The play was part of a goal-line stand that forced a field goal and overtime in a Washington win.

HALL FRUSTRATES PEYTON MANNING

Hall held his own against the 2013 NFL MVP in a road trip at Denver, picking off Peyton twice. On the first play, he hangs tough with imposing receiver Demaryius Thomas, outpositioning the bigger player for the ball. On the second pick, Hall makes a jaw-dropping, one-handed, over the shoulder grab.

HALL STOPS CALVIN JOHNSON AND SCORES

By staying in front of the four-time All-Pro receiver, Hall puts himself in position to intercept Matthew Stafford before sifting through traffic for a 17-yard touchdown.

HALL TO THE HOUSE

By having the awareness to scoop a backwards pass ruled a fumble, Hall did not have to break a sweat in a 75-yard trip to the end zone. In the process he scored the Redskins first points of the 2013 regular season.

Teammates atwitter for Hall

Once the defensive back tweeted the news of his return, several teammates celebrated on Twitter. Division rival (and fellow Hokie) Michael Vick chimed in, too.
