Robert Griffin III In Fine February Company

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on February 12, 2014 – 12:55 pm

Robert Griffin III was born 24 years ago today. I think it’s safe to say he’s not the most famous person with a February 12 birthday.

That’s no knock on the Redskins quarterback. The top spot will likely never fall, unless someone else born on the date has their face carved into a granite mountain in South Dakota.

-Born on Feb. 12, 1809
-16th president of the United States
-Preserved the Union during the Civil War
-Delivered the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation

Similarities: RG3 has expressed an interest in studying law. Lincoln was partner in a law practice with William Herndon. Griffin III is a professional football player who excelled in track-and-field and basketball. Standing 6-foot-4, Lincoln was a feisty grappler enshrined in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

-Born on Feb. 12, 1934
-11-time NBA Champion
-Five-time NBA MVP
-Member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame (Class of 1975)

Similarities: Russell was a decorated collegiate athlete at the University of San Francisco, where he won two championships and was named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player in 1955. Robert Griffin III won the 2011 Heisman Trophy at Baylor. Russell revolutionized defensive play in the NBA with his shot-blocking ability. RGIII forced defenses to adapt to the read-option offense in 2012. After a territorial pick,  Russell was the second player selected in the 1956 NBA draft. The Redskins drafted Griffin III second overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.

-Born Feb. 12, 1809
-Traveled to the Galapagos Islands on the HMS Beagle.
-Wrote “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.”
-Developed the theory of Evolution

Similarities: Well this is a stretch. Darwin’s theories detailed how man evolved from lower life forms. Griffin III’s dual-threat style makes him one of a handful of young quarterbacks to display the evolution of the position.
