Wes Phillips is a third-generation NFL coach who spent seven years with the Cowboys.
His dad Wade has 37 years of pro coaching experience with nine different clubs.Grandfather Oail Andrew “Bum” Phillips was the head coach of the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints.
When Wes first became tight ends coach in Dallas, he joked about being an offensive coach in his family.
“I played quarterback in high school and college, so that was kind of how that started,” Wes said. “(Dad) does introduce me as kind of the black sheep of the family, being with him and my grandfather both being on the defensive side of the ball. It was just kind of a natural progression for me to go from quarterbacks. I’d rather be the guy with the ball and deciding what we want to do with it.”
Rest assured, Wes. Dad is proud.
