As part of his opening statement as Redskins head coach, Jay Gruden delivered a series of thank yous. He reserved a special thanks for his older brother Jon Gruden, the ESPN Monday Night Football broadcaster who hired Jay to be an assistant coach in Tampa Bay.

“I wouldn’t be sitting here today without learning everything that I know about football from him,” Jay Gruden said. “What a great brother. What a great person. What a great football coach.”

Jon Gruden appeared on ESPN’s Mike & Mike Wednesday morning and told the hosts his brother deserved the honor.

“I’m really proud, obviously,” Gruden said. “Here’s a guy that not only is my brother, but he did it the right way. He played Arena football. He played for Howard Schnellenberger at Louisville, had some tough two-a-day practices, was my assistant for seven years in Tampa. He really did double days. He coached for the Orlando Predators in the spring and coached for us in the fall. I remember one year he coached in 40 games. He’s done it the hard way.”

Gruden said he expects his brother to rise up to a “tremendous responsibility.”

“He gets the keys to one of the NFL’s most global franchises. It’s recognized – I think – around the world. This has got a great tradition, a world championship tradition. It’s a tremendous responsibility, and I’m happy for him. I expect him to make the most of it.”

As a member of the media, Gruden said he hopes his family ties pay off. While Jay Gruden was in Cincinnati, he would talk football with his brother once or twice a week.

“He better give me some information,” Jon Gruden said. “I’m going to treat it as professional as I can. But I’m sure being that he is my brother, he will trust me with some inside information like who’s gonna be starting in a game. Maybe he’ll give me something like that. “

Gruden also opined on the coaching situation in Detroit, how he would develop Matt Stafford and how he would approach coaching against a division rival in a conference championship game.
