Despite missing seven games due to injury, tight end Jordan Reed was named to the 2013 Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-Rookie Team.

The 23-year old out of Florida tallied 45 catches for 499 yards, setting new franchise marks for rookie tight ends in each category.

Rick ‘Doc’ Walker On Jay Gruden: ‘We’re Talking About A Football Junkie’

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 14, 2014 – 12:53 pm

doc

In 1993 and 1995, Redskins Radio Network broadcaster and former Redskins tight end Rick “Doc” Walker covered Tampa Bay Storm quarterback Jay Gruden in the ArenaBowl. Last week, Walker sat down with me at Redskins Park to talk about Gruden’s career hours before he would be introduced as Washington’s head coach. He commented on the coach as only he could. (The following interview has been edited and condensed).

Gabe Hiatt: What do you remember about calling Jay Gruden’s games in the AFL?

I’ve watched him go from player to coach to assistant coach to coordinator. I’ve watched his entire career, and it is interesting when I heard he was named here. That’s full circle for me. Pierre Garçon was in Los Angeles last week to give NFL Network an instant reaction to the Jay Gruden hire.

But that’s not all Garçon discussed.

The day before Washington announced Gruden as the new head coach, Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson asked Garçon  about the differences between Peyton Manning and Robert Griffin III.

“Peyton, I caught him on the end of his career, so he was more accurate. We had to be where he wanted us to be at the time… he told us to be. Robert, he has a more lively arm, so he’s going to continue to make plays go on as things break down, so it’s different. Robert throws it harder just because he’s younger and has a fresh arm.”

Charley Casserly’s Most Important Question For Jay Gruden

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on January 14, 2014 – 6:00 am

Casserly

Charley Casserly appeared on NFL Network last week  to discuss what he knows and doesn’t know about Jay Gruden.

The former Redskins general manager liked how Gruden improved the offense in Cincinnati, developed Andy Dalton and had head coaching experience in the Arena Football League.

The expert’s biggest question was, how would Gruden balance  his focus  on calling plays for the offense while managing the other phases of the game? Read more »
