Watch Mike Shanahan’s Final Statement

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 30, 2013 – 10:25 am

About 15 minutes after the Redskins announced they have relieved Executive Vice President/Head Coach Mike Shanahan of his duties with the team, Shanahan made a statement to the media at Redskins Park.

“First off, I’d like to thank the fans,” Shanahan said.

“Through the first couple years, you go through some rough times. I can’t tell you how supportive this fan base is. And to be able to coach here… in front of fans like that, that support you the way they do, made me feel very special.”

Shanahan went on to thank Daniel Snyder for an opportunity to coach the team and thank the players for their efforts.

The former coach talked about the team’s issues with the salary cap, the progression of the franchise under his direction and positives for the future of the Redskins.

Watch video of the full statement below and follow @Redskins for updates throughout the day. Executive Vice President/General Manager Bruce Allen will address the media at 2 p.m. ET.

Thank You to Mike Shanahan for the countless hours that you have spent in trying to rebuild the Washington Redskins TEAM. I am sure that when you signed on as the Head Coach four years ago, this is not what you expected, nor did the Fans. Hail to You for Your Efforts and Hard Work. Wishig you well in the future that is before You.

I just read the below statement in one of many articles that I am sure will appear over the next several days.

“Robert Griffin III is the most important concern for the next Washington Redskins Head Coach.”

In my opinion, RGIII is not, nor should he be. I have said repeatedly that this is a TEAM and each and every Player is an integeral part of the Future of the Washington Redskins TEAM being successful on the Playing Fields of the NFL. In order for a Winning Season to occur, the Players must come together as a TEAM and realize that not one is of more importance than the other. When this occurs, Winning will once again become a tradition for the Washington Redskins TEAM.

As Head Coach Shanahan does deserve to take the blame for the failures that this team had this year, Coach Haslett and his staff certainly should be blamed for the poor performance the defense showed ( or didn’t ). Giving up an average of 28 pts. per game is shameful. Also, Kyle Shanahan with his offensive wisdom only averaged 18 pts per game. That does not add up to a winning season…..either.

What a loss for the real fans!

RGIII and Snyder are destructive and losers for the Washington Team!

After a life time of support of the Washington Redskins I will choose a new team

that has class from top to the bottom! With the establishment of this Recalcitrant

RGIII as most important player coupled with Snyder support there is no future for

the Paying Fans! Now it is all down Racial Lines!!!

When you under mine the Head Coach you destroy the team!
