Darrell Green stood on a stage at the Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner and talked about childhood holidays when he was grateful just for a piece of fruit and a pair of ill-fitting shoes.
Shortly thereafter, two doors swung open and busloads of underprivileged children flooded the ballroom.
The Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation ensured kids from low-income and broken homes had a reason to celebrate at the 24th annual Christmas With the Redskins.
The children were treated to a buffet of sliders, chicken tenders, french fries and brownies. Behind a black curtain, tables full of stuffed animals, pink Barbie convertibles and action figures waited for new owners. Appropriately-sized sneakers had been selected for each individual.
“My mom made us – because we went kicking and screaming – support other people even though we had nothing,” Green said.
“All of the Green kids, that’s what we do naturally.”
Alfred Morris, DeAngelo Hall, Kedric Golston and Will Montgomery represented the Redskins, signed autographs and took pictures with the attendees.
“You like around and see all these smiling kids faces, it makes it worthwhile coming out here tonight,” Morris said.
“That’s big to always give back. I’m just so happy so many kids get sponsored and have something to look forward to on Christmas.”
Denard Span and Ross Detwiler represented the Washington Nationals.
The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation donated 100 of more than 400 toys at the event. By the end of the night, every single item had to be claimed by a child.
Mondrea Jacobs runs Never Say Never Ministries, an outreach organization that helps select children in need. She’s been helping Green put on Christmas With the Redskins for 23 years.
In the middle of the event, she recognized the former cornerback with a plaque for his service to the area’s youth.
“This is maybe the only Christmas some of them will ever have, because of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, and for that we’re ever grateful,” Jacobs said.
