Third-Year Duo Facing New Challenge

Posted by Stephen Czarda on December 10, 2013 – 4:16 pm

It’s the worst possible news a player can receive—you’ve been placed on Injured Reserve.

Sandwiched between talk of his future and who will be under center this weekend in Atlanta, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan announced yesterday that third-year running back Evan Royster was being shelved on IR after suffering a high ankle sprain.

With Week 17 confirmed as the last game of the season—only three weeks away–Shanahan said Royster’s recovery wouldn’t complete until after the regular season window closed.

The former Penn State star isn’t the only third-year Redskin that will be battle the tough road of recovery so many athletes face daily this offseason. Just three weeks prior to Royster’s painful injury, Shanahan announced that Leonard Hankerson was going under the knife for ACL—and later discovered LCL—surgery.

Together the 2011 draft classmates are vowing to return better than ever.

Darrell Green Hosts 24th Annual Christmas With The Redskins

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 10, 2013 – 3:54 pm

Darrell Green stood on a stage at the Hilton McLean Tyson’s Corner and talked about childhood holidays when he was grateful just for a piece of fruit and a pair of ill-fitting shoes.

Shortly thereafter, two doors swung open and busloads of underprivileged children flooded the ballroom.

The Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation ensured kids from low-income and broken homes had a reason to celebrate at the 24th annual Christmas With the Redskins.

The children were treated to a buffet of sliders, chicken tenders, french fries and brownies. Behind a black curtain, tables full of stuffed animals, pink Barbie convertibles and action figures waited for new owners. Appropriately-sized sneakers had been selected for each individual. Read more »

Power Rankings Roundup: Week 15

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 10, 2013 – 2:44 pm

We’re approaching Richard Gere territory. The power rankings writers are doing their best Sgt. Emil Foley.

A win by the Houston Texans and a Redskins loss in Atlanta could mean Washington drops to the No. 32 spot in the national media’s power rankings. In other words, we would have nowhere else to go!

ESPN points to inaccuracy from the quarterback as its reason to put the Redskins one spot away from the bottom.

Redskins Weekly Stat Ranking Update

Well for you locals that make up a portion of Redskins Nation, I hope you’re having a fantastic snow day and—possibly—time off from dredging around the office staring at the wall clock and counting down the number of minutes until you’re useless meeting with the boss is over.

For those of you who have to work on this wintery day, I’m glad the Redskins Blog can divert your attention from wondering how you’ll get home with so much white fluff blanketing your vehicle.

Anyway, onward to the football side of things.

The ripped jersey seen above explains all.

Pierre Garcon’s impassioned presence has been on full display this season. Whether it’s in the depths of the Black Hole, at the thinned-aired Mile High, inside the famed Lambeau Field or prancing around in the frozen slush of FedExField, Garcon’s taken one large step up the ladder in top wide receiver discussions. If only the season was going as well as he’s been playing individually.

Already eclipsing career-highs, Garcon’s second catch of the day against the Chiefs on Sunday officially gave him 1,000 receiving yards on the season—his first as an NFLer.

More from this week’s stat ranking update:

Redskins Park Is A Winter Wonderland

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on December 10, 2013 – 10:32 am

Coming to work today wasn’t so bad.

The roads were relatively free of confused motorists, and I only fishtailed once. A beautiful white blanket of precipitation has enveloped Redskins Park.

While you’re roasting your bare toes in front of an open fire, making gas stove s’mores and pretending to telework, use these photos of the team’s Loudoun County facility to vicariously experience the elements.  Read more »
