Brig Owens and Ken Houston (AP)

If you read my look at the careers of a few choice Redskins defensive backs after 30, you’ll understand how potent a safety tandem Washington had in the ’70s. Both Brig Owens and Ken Houston were named to the list of 80 greatest Redskins.

A few weeks ago during Alumni Homecoming weekend, I had the chance to roam with a camera and a microphone at a gala Dan Snyder and Bruce Snyder held for distinguished alumni, whom I interviewed about the brotherhood that bonds past players and what Redskins pride means to each of them.

We’ve been rolling out the interviews on Redskins.com, and I’m going to bring some your way in the coming weeks. First up, Owens and Houston. Read more »

Chris Cooley’s Sunday In Philadelphia

Redskins Broadcast Network/ESPN 980 personality Chris Cooley didn’t take the team flight up to Philadelphia this weekend and it nearly forced him to heed the assistance of Eagles fans.

Rushing up to the Linc hours before the start of the game, Cooley entered the stadium in a blur, hurrying to get some last-minute prep in before the Redskins’ third divisional game of the season.

When he came back out of the stadium shortly after the conclusion of the game Cooley noticed his car lights were still on.

Uh-oh!

Cooley explained the situation on Monday.

Brian Orakpo Climbing All-Time Sack List

In 1982 the National Football League gave into the demands of making the sack an official stat. Unanimous joy has pursued ever since.

While the league continues to trend towards an offense-happy environment, there’s still something to be said of the level of excitement brewed from a defensive player breaking free and slamming a quarterback to the turf.

On Sunday in front of a Philadelphia crowd that would cower in his presence if they weren’t 200-plus feet away booing his exploits relentlessly, linebacker Brian Orakpo recorded 1.5 sacks to bring his total to 35 as a member of the Washington Redskins.

He now is sixth all-time in franchise history in the statistical category.

DeAngelo Hall At 30 And Beyond

Things I’m worried will happen to me after my 30th birthday:

A trip to Home Depot will be a treat.
-My sweater collection will expand. I’ll wear a wool sheath every day, even in the summer. (I’m wearing a sweater today. It’s happening already.)
-The bridge from my chest mane to my back scruff will finally connect, creating a Beringia of sorts.

Now that you’re thoroughly grossed out, we can discuss DeAngelo Hall and the 30th anniversary of his birth. Read more »

The Sweat Dripping Brian Orakpo Workout

The bulging biceps after sacking another quarterback explains it all.

Linebacker Brian Orakpo is a big man. Very big. In fact, his biceps are bigger than my head and he could probably bench press three of me—with one hand.

On Sunday, the fifth-year linebacker recorded 1.5 sacks to bring his season total to 5.5. Without a legendary workout plan, the two-time Pro Bowl would be thrown around like a ragdoll against offensive lineman much wider than he is.

But they don’t.

Check out this exclusive peek into the training regime and mindset of ‘Rak at the Redskins Park weight room:

Redskins Weekly Stat Ranking Update

Posted by Stephen Czarda on November 19, 2013 – 10:04 am

For the second time in three seasons, the Washington Redskins sit four games below .500 with six games remaining and a myriad of new problems seemingly appear with each passing gameday.

One of those has been the dip in involvement of sophomore running back Alfred Morris fresh off one of the most impressive individual performances in franchise history last year. On Sunday, the fans got what they wanted—a whole lotta No. 46 early.

18 times to be precise the second-year pro touched the ball, the most in any half of his fledgling career.

But that production resulted in nothing more than a doughnut on the scoreboard. In the second half with Robert Griffin III mounting the troops in a comeback attempt through aerial bombs, No. 46 had a sideline view.

Third in the league in rushing, Morris has a chance to take the lead this weekend with LeSean McCoy and Marshawn Lynch on byes.

More from this week’s stat ranking update:

Fletcher Joins Favre In Select Group

The sound served as a reminder.

London Fletcher stormed through the A-gap on a delayed blitz and squarely smacked his shoulder into Nick Foles’ breastplate. Fletcher’s pads audibly clacked when he picked up his 39th career sack and showed he’s still making his mark on the game. Read more »
