Young, Robinson Provide Explosive Plays

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on November 18, 2013 – 12:07 pm

On what was ultimately another disheartening afternoon for the Redskins in Philadelphia, Darrel Young, Aldrick Robinson and Robert Griffin III gave Washington a chance.

Two explosive fourth-quarter touchdown catches and the ensuing two-point conversions put Washington eight points away from tying a game dictated by the Eagles in the first 45 minutes of play.

Let’s examine what led to each scoring reception.

Highlight: Darrel Young puts the Redskins on the board with a 62-yard catch and run.

What went right: A mismatch and a timely cut. Philadelphia begins the play with five men at the line. Linebacker Trent Cole, a converted defensive end, shows blitz but backs off at the snap. Darrel Young runs into the flat, acting as a safety valve for Robert Griffin III, and Cole follows in coverage. The quarterback can’t find anyone open and takes a jab step into the pocket before escaping  to his left. Middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans keys on the running quarterback. Once Young runs out of room in the flat, he adjusts to his quarterback by turning upfield and leaving Cole in pursuit. Griffin III fires a pass for Young that allows the fullback to collect himself and split the approaching defenders. Safety Patrick Chung and Cole hammer each other instead of Young, who sprints free for six points.

Highlight: Aldrick Robinson hauls in a 41-yard touchdown grab.

What went right: An adjustment to the ball in the air. The Redskins trot out two tight ends and two receivers. Griffin III fakes a handoff to Roy Helu Jr., sending the flow of the front seven to the left. Pierre Garçon draws coverage from the safety with a crossing route in the middle of the field. Aldrick Robinson sprints to the end zone while Griffin III loads up for a home run ball. Robinson has a step on Roc Carmichael in single coverage. When Carmichael catches up and tracks the football, Robinson creates separation by stepping behind the cornerback and crouches into position to receive the pass. The receiver keeps his hands under the ball and squeezes it tight to his chest, leaving no doubt for the officials.
Robinson 2“It was a designed play,” Robinson told CSN Washington after the game. “I read the coverage, and RG, he read me. He threw me an opportunity ball and I came down with it.”
