Darrel Young is never too busy to make a difference.
The fullback is a mainstay at community events. On Tuesday he pulled double duty, starting the day off playing quarterback at a Play60 mini-combine before donning a green elf’s hat to deliver letters written to Santa Claus at Macy’s. As part of the 2013 Believe Campaign, Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every letter written and delivered to a local Macy’s store. Macy’s will donate up to $1 million.
When Young arrived at Macy’s, he enjoyed time with children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation who either had a wish granted or are still waiting for a wish to be granted.
For Young, it was just another chance to make a kid smile.
“This NFL thing doesn’t last forever,” he said. “If you can impact a couple lives — maybe even two — during your tenure, you’ve done a good job.
“This is the good times in the NFL. You just go out to have fun. If football comes, it comes, but giving back to kids is the best part.”
Young said he tried to get to the kids in the giving spirit.
“If you can give one gift to someone that you love, it’s meaningful,” Young said. “My niece gave me a pen last year, and I don’t even touch it. It’s just sitting up in my apartment, and I’ll remember she gave me that.”
