Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on November 8, 2013 – 5:47 pm

Mike Shanahan

The whirlwind week is finally winding down. After going 1-1 in two games over the past five days, the Redskins receive a long weekend to recuperate.

Offensive production hasn’t always translated into a win this season. A missed throw on a potential fake punt Sunday spotlighted missed opportunities on special teams.

Executive Vice President and Head Coach Mike Shanahan spoke to the media on Friday night about mistakes in Minnesota, Robert Griffin III still learning how to slide and the ongoing search for a kick return specialist.

What Went Right: Redskins Vikings

Posted by Gabe Hiatt on November 8, 2013 – 12:22 pm

The Redskins outgained the Vikings by 126 yards, possessed the ball for 12 more minutes and played turnover free football. But after allowing 20 unanswered points in the second half, the team returned to Washington with another frustrating loss.

Washington still ran the ball effectively and executed a flawless screen game. Let’s examine what went right in Minnesota.

Highlight: Facing a third and 15, Pierre Garçon catches a screen pass and races 30 yards for a first down.

What went right: Execution. Due to the down and distance, Minnesota rushes four linemen and drops everyone else back in a zone to protect the first down. Garçon starts on the left side and runs a crossing route over the middle on a play designed for him. Leonard Hankerson, Jordan Reed and Roy Helu Jr. set up successful blocks as soon as Garçon makes the catch. The receiver has a clear path to run untouched for the first 13 yards. Garçon delivers a forearm shiver to linebacker Erin Henderson to break one tackle and ducks under another hit before the Vikings bring him down.

Player’s Turn: Robert Griffin III At The Mic

He tried his hardest, but in the end Robert Griffin III’s three touchdown performance against the Minnesota Vikings wasn’t enough to leave the Land of 1,000 Lakes with victory.

Completing 24 of his 37 passes, the reigning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year dazzled the Minnesota crowd. The obnoxious horn that the Vikings blow whenever something good happens for them was silenced.

Entering the locker room at halftime, the Redskins held a 10-point lead and looked destined to string together consecutive wins for the first time this season.

But as they did against the Broncos, the second half provided nothing but frustration and a plane ride back to the DMV pondering what exactly went wrong.

While no team wants to enter Week 11 3-6, Griffin III hammered home the fact this season is far from over in his postgame press conference.

Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

Posted by Stephen Czarda on November 8, 2013 – 10:19 am

The definition of tough loss received a new entry late Thursday night when the Washington Redskins let the Minnesota Vikings, a one-win team, back in the game and then some.

Matched up against a reeling Vikings defense, Robert Griffin III looked ready to grab the crown of Mr. Thursday Night through the first half, connecting on three touchdown passes. Flashbacks to last Thanksgiving started popping up.

With Griffin III dissecting the secondary with ease, Alfred Morris powering over linebackers twice his size and Pierre Garcon taking advantage of one-on-one matchups, the offense looked destined to challenge the season-high point total of 45.

…Then the second half happened.

The defense couldn’t contain Adrian Peterson, all of a sudden Christian Ponder looked like a world-beater and they couldn’t create any turnovers.

The offense didn’t do much either until the last drive.

And I’m sure you haven’t, but don’t forget the special teams miscues too.

Anyway, head coach Mike Shanahan addressed all of these questions after the game.
