First Quarter Happenings: #WASvsDEN

The reminiscing is over. All week long we were looking backwards, and I’m tired of it.

Mike Shanahan’s 21 years as an assistant and a head coach in Denver deserved a thorough once over. A comeback victory over the Bears was fun to dissect. Marveling at Robert Griffin III running the ball brought up the euphoria of last season’s post bye-week playoff run.

But this afternoon in Denver, a home team that looked invisible just three weeks ago is waiting. The Broncos are hurting after suffering their first loss to Indianapolis last week. Denver needs to get back on track to keep pace with Kansas City heading into its own bye.

By now, the Redskins should be tired of hearing about Peyton Manning. As a heavy underdog, today’s contest is precisely the type of game the Redskins need to steal to make serious case for the playoffs.

Let’s see if they can make it a game. Below you’ll find a running summary of the first quarter in Denver.

Before we even get to kickoff, allow me to comment on an amazing turn of events in Detroit.

Matthew Stafford just completed a 22-yard pass to Calvin Johnson, hurried to the 1-yard line and leapt into the end zone on a quarterback sneak to put the Lions an extra point and away taking a one-point lead on the Cowboys with 00:12 left in the game.

A last second Dallas loss would be a great way to start the day.

KICKOFF: Matt Prater boots the opening kickoff for a touchback.

Redskins first drive

1st and 10 <20: Griffin III fakes twice and runs up the middle for 4 yards.

2nd and 6 <24: Griffin III can’t complete a pass to Jordan Reed.

Timeout Washington

3rd and 6 <24: Griffin III is flushed out of the pocket and runs right for 1 yard.

4th and 5 <25: Sav Rocca with a nice punt out of bounds at around the 23-yard line.

*UPDATE* The Lions beat the Cowboys by one.

Broncos first drive

1st and 10 <23: Peyton Manning completes a pass to Knowshon Moreno for 13 yards.

1st and 10 <36: Moreno runs right for 8 yards.

2nd and 2 <44: Manning finds Demaryius Thomas for 5 yards.

1st and 10 <49: Moreno for 1 yard.

2nd and 9 <50>: Montee Ball runs for 8 yards.

3rd and 1 >42: Manning hits Julius THomas or 19 yards.

1st and 10 >23: Moreno runs for 3 yards.

2nd and 7 >20: Moreno catches a pass and runs after the catch for 14 yards.

1st and 10 >6: Manning finds Wes Welker for a 6-yard touchdown. The extra point is good.

Broncos 7 Redskins 0

Prater drills his second touchback of the day.

Redskins second drive

1st and 10 <20: Griffin III lines up under center and hands off to Alfred Morris, who gains 5 yards.

2nd and 5 <25: Morris runs again from 4 yards.

3rd and 1 <29: Griffin keeps it in the pistol formation and finds Jordan Reed for 7 yards and the first down.

1st and 10 <36: Griffin launches a deep ball to Aldrick Robinson, but the receiver is well-covered and the ball was overthrown.

2nd and 10 <36: Roy Helu Jr. takes a handoff 3 yards to the lef.

3rd and 7 <39: Griffin III takes the shotgun snap and throws out of reach for Reed.

4th and 7 <39: Sav Rocca punts near the end zone. Jerome Murphy downs it at the 1-yard line.

Broncos second drive

1st and 10 <1: Moreno runs up the middle for 4 yards.

2nd and 6 <5: Jacob Tamme catches a 15-yard pass from Manning.

1st and 10 <20: Moreno runs for 3 yards.

2nd and 7 <23: Manning lofts a pass for Demaryius Thomas, but DeAngelo Hall breaks up the pass.

3rd and 7 <23: Manning’s pass intended for Andre Caldwell bounces off the turf. The Broncos will punt for the first time today.

4th and 7 <23: Josh Morgan returns Britton Colquitt’s punt 2 yards to the 24-yard line.

Redskins third drive

1st an 10 <24: Griffin III lines up in the pistol and hands off to Morris, who picks his way for 6 yards.

2nd and 4 <30: Grifin III fakes the handoff and throws a quick pass to Pierre Garcon for a 5-yard loss. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie sniffed it out all the way.

3rd and 9 <25: Griffin III passes with Von Miller in his face. Santana Moss grabs the ball, turns upfield and extends for 10 yards and a first down.

Coach’s Challenge: Denver is challenging the first down spot.

The ruling on the field is confirmed. Denver is charged its first timeout.
