The Redskins early struggles continued in the first quarter, mainly on the offensive side of the pigskin. Robert Griffin III connected on only five of his nine passes, Alfred Morris averaged only a little over a yard per carry on the first three drives and Santana Moss had a very rare dropped pass in open field.

On defense, the unit was stout on the first drive, but struggled to contain Matt Flynn and Co. on the second drive, as they marched 80 yards down the field for a touchdown to rookie tight end Mychal Rivera. Special teams kicked the frustrations even further, as the Raiders blocked their first punt in three years for a touchdown.

There is still time to turn the woes around and if the drive to end the quarter is any inclination of what the team should do moving forward, it’s a hurry-up attack.

Here are some highlights from the second quarter of play with the Redskins inside the Raiders’ five-yard line:

Redskins 4th Drive Continued:

2nd and Goal: Griffin III pressured and he has no choice but to throw it out…called for intentional grounding.

3rd and Goal: On the 18-yard line…Garcon catches on a short route and dives for the pylon…but called for stepping out of bounds at the four.

4th and Goal: John Potter is out for the field goal attempt…delay of game called. After the backwards movement, Potter’s kick is GOOD! Cuts deficit to 11.

His kickoff goes out of the end zone. Touchback.

Raiders 3rd Drive:

1st and 10 <20: Matt Flynn in shotgun…hands off to Darren McFadden. One-yard gain.

2nd and 9 <21: Wildcat again…McFadden with a short net gain. Brandon Meriweather with his first tackle.

3rd and 4 <26: Denarius Moore gets a first down.

1st and 10 <38: Play action fake…Flynn rolls out and tries his best Robert Griffin III impression but he losses one.

2nd and 11 <37: Rashad Jennings tackled by Meriweather. Gained six.

3rd and 5 <43: Shotgun…Flynn is intercepted by David Amerson and he returns it for a pick-six. TOUCHDOWN! First of his career. Congrats rookie! Extra point is good! Deficit cut to four.

Potter trots back out for the kickoff…Jacoby Ford takes it out. Niles Paul and E.J. Biggers with the joint tackle.

Raiders 4th Drive:

1st and 10 <19: Fullback carry (Marcel Reece). Gains a few.

2nd and 6 <23: Shotgun…Flynn hits Rod Streater.

3rd and 2 <27: Meriweather clobbers Jennings right around the first down marker. Chain gang’s debut, let’s see what they say…just short!

4th and 1 <28: Marquette King is out to punt…Chris Thompson back…Raiders fake and get a first down.

1st and 10 <47: Flynn airs it out but it is incomplete.

2nd and 10 <47: Flynn hits Jennings on a screen. Gains eight.

3rd and 2 >45: Flynn tries to hit Brice Butler but he can’t get both feet in-bounds.

4th and 2 >45:  Punt goes end over end into the end zone for a touchback.

Redskins 5th Drive:

1st and 10 <20: Griffin III escapes a sack attempt and gets the ball out just before he’s taken down.

2nd and 10 <20: Morris picks up three.

3rd and 7 <23: Shotgun…Griffin III remains patient in a collapsing pocket and hits Pierre Garcon for a 16-yard gain.

1st and 10 <39: Roy Helu Jr. with his first carry of the game. No gain.

2nd and 10 <39: Pistol…Griffin III hurried due to pressure…pass incomplete.

3rd and 10 <39: Griffin III dumps the pigskin off to Helu Jr. for a first down. A key to the game, Redskins convert on two straight third downs.

1st and 10 >46: Morris pounds his way to a four-yard gain.

2nd and 6 >42: Pistol…Morris gains three.

3rd and 3 >39: Griffin III barking the play out…Morris stuffed for no gain.

4th and 3 >39: Offense remains on the field…Redskins call timeout. After the break, Moss in motion…Griffin III sacked.

Raiders 5th Drive:

1st and 10 <49: Jennings gains five.

2nd and 5 >46: Pitch to Jennings…swarmed by a gaggle of Redskins for a loss. Two-minute warning.

3rd and 6 >47: Ryan Kerrigan doesn’t like any quarterbacks…not named Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins or Rex Grossman. Just adding to his sack total (four) for the season.

4th and 13 <46: Thompson back…takes punt down to 19.

Redskins 6th Drive:

1st and 10 <19: Logan Paulsen in motion…Garcon on screen gains four.

2nd and 6 <23: Griffin III’s pass is incomplete.

3rd and 6 <23: Griffin III hits Leonard Hankerson, but he is short of chain movement.

4th and 3 <26: Sav Rocca is back…Fair caught by Jacoby Ford at own 32.

Raiders 6th Drive:

1st and 10 <32: Flynn finds Jennings on screen…London Fletcher with the tackle.

2nd and 3 <39: Jennings close to first down marker…doesn’t get it.

3rd and 1 <41: Flynn with a keeper for a first down. Raiders timeout.

1st and 10 <42: Flynn connects with Mychal Rivera…but he has slippery hands like butter. Dropped.

2nd and 10 <42: Pass is incomplete.

3rd and 10 <42: Pass finds Jennings. Short of first down. Quarter over.
