Fourth Quarter Conclusions: #WASvsOAK

For the first time this season, the Washington Redskins are leading through three quarters of play.

The offense looked stagnant out of the locker room. On the first drive of the third quarter it was three-and-out and the second was stunted by a fumble forced out of the hands of Logan Paulsen. After a missed Raiders field goal though, the Redskins orchestrated their best drive of the game and capped it off with a touchdown connection between Robert Griffin III and Pierre Garcon once again.

The defense has created pressure all day, and on the last two plays of the third quarter Barry Cofield and Brian Orakpo recorded back-to-back sacks.

Here’s complete play-by-play of fourth quarter:

Third Quarter Thoughts: #WASvsOAK

For the fourth straight week, the Washington Redskins enter the locker room at halftime down, this time trailing 14-10 to the Oakland Raiders. At times the Redskins have looked like they’ve solved their early season struggle and then others–it’s the same problems that have them in an 0-3 hole.

The offense stalled on the first three drives of the game, but after offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan elected to go no-huddle heavy, the Redskins gains yardage in large chunks, getting down to within the Raiders 10-yard line. Unfortunately, all they could settle for is a field goal after an intentional grounding call moved the team back to the 18-yard line.

The defense has had it’s best collective performance to date, limiting the damage after an early touchdown. David Amerson telegraphed Matt Flynn locking in on one of his wide receivers and recorded his first interception and pick-six of the campaign. Ryan Kerrigan also added to his torrent start with his fourth sack in as many games.

If any unit symbolizes the Redskins’ up-and-down day, it’s the special teams unit. Sav Rocca had one of his three punts blocked, but John Potter is two-for-two on extra point attempts, nailed a chip shot field goal and each of his kickoffs have landed in or past the end zone.

Anyway, here’s how the third quarter went:

Second Quarter Summary: #WASvsOAK

The Redskins early struggles continued in the first quarter, mainly on the offensive side of the pigskin. Robert Griffin III connected on only five of his nine passes, Alfred Morris averaged only a little over a yard per carry on the first three drives and Santana Moss had a very rare dropped pass in open field.

On defense, the unit was stout on the first drive, but struggled to contain Matt Flynn and Co. on the second drive, as they marched 80 yards down the field for a touchdown to rookie tight end Mychal Rivera. Special teams kicked the frustrations even further, as the Raiders blocked their first punt in three years for a touchdown.

There is still time to turn the woes around and if the drive to end the quarter is any inclination of what the team should do moving forward, it’s a hurry-up attack.

Here are some highlights from the second quarter of play with the Redskins inside the Raiders’ five-yard line:

First Quarter Happenings: #WASvsOAK

Desperation may not be associated with a Week 4 game pitting teams from the AFC West and NFC East against one another very often, but today’s game is a must-win for the Washington Redskins.

Entering the season, the Redskins were showered with high remarks and a second-straight playoff berth seemed to be a lock. After all, this is the same team that is returning 21 of 22 starters from a season ago and others such as wide receiver Santana Moss remained in place.

Three games in however, and the team has put itself in a similar predicament as last season–three games below .500, last place in the division and naysayers feasting on the struggles. Turning the ship around though, starts today. With the Bye Week looming, the momentum carried over from a win could reap serious benefits in the long run. The first game after the Bye Week is at Dallas.

Before we get there though, they must beat Oakland today.

Here’s play-by-play of all that happened in the first quarter:

It doesn’t make a difference if you’re in Washington, D.C. or the Black Hole to know that fall is officially here.

For now it’s a fairly cloudy morning in the Bay Area, but the sun should peak through the thick layer of clouds and sea of black periodically.

Current forecast calls for a kickoff temperature of 72 degrees with light winds and a whole lot of Raiders fans that will be going home disappointed.

Here’s a complete weather outlook for the afternoon tilt courtesy of the guys and gals at Weather.com:
