Lost in the shuffle of the Redskins defense hoping to see better days on Sunday against Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush and Co., is the unheralded quarterback matchup between two of the best at the position.

With the first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Lions selected University of Georgia gunslinger (the perfect descriptor for his style of play) Matthew Stafford fresh off of a 25 touchdown junior season. Stafford, who’s overcome injuries and doubters, set an NFL record last season for the most pass attempts (727) in a single season. Robert Griffin III will probably never be asked to throw that many passes and why would he?

He already has more rushing yards in one season than Stafford has in his half-decade NFL career.

Anyway, this “rivalry” (the Redskins won 18 straight games at one point) resumes at FedExField where the Redskins have yet to lose to the Lions since the first turnstile went down in 1997. They didn’t lose at RFK Stadium either. Griffith Stadium? Yeah their record against the Motor City cats was spotless there too.

Here are some great shots of their matchups dating back to 1968 at the famed RFK Stadium:
