By association, the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles are two of the biggest rivals in the National Football League. Dating back to their first encounter in 1934, the team’s have faced one another every year with the exception of 1943 when the Eagles merged with their Keystone State brothers, the Steelers, to form the Phil-Pitt Steagles.

Seriously who picked that creative name?

Anyway, the NFC East foes have engaged in some heated games over the years and have gotten the best other both on the field and through trades. With a little less than 72 hours remaining until the 157th edition of Redskins-Eagles, here’s a gallery of some of the most memorable moments between the two:

Redskins-Eagles Have A Lot Of History

Monday’s matchup between the Redskins and the Eagles will mark the 157th overall meeting between the division rivals. This is the 156th regular season meeting between the Redskins and Eagles’ franchises, not including two meetings in 1943 when the Eagles merged with the Steelers to form the Phil-Pitt Steagles. The Redskins lead the all-time regular season series 80-70-5. With exception of the 1943 season, the two teams have played a home-and-home series every year since 1936.

Including a playoff win in 1990, the Redskins’ 81 combined victories against the Eagles are their most against any opponent. A win on Monday would give the Redskins three straight wins against the Eagles for the first time since winning four straight across the 1985-87 seasons.

Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

On Friday, Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan addressed the media one final time before his team takes the field Monday Night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

It marks the first time since 2006 that the Redskins opener is not on a Sunday, as they played Minnesota Vikings at home on Monday Night Football.

A win at home would mean so much more than Mike Shanahan tying Tom Landry for the most season opening wins (16) since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, London Fletcher becoming the sole league Ironman and giving the team its longest regular season winning streak (eight) since 1991. It would give the team a jumpstart on its defense of the NFC East crown tour.

Anyway, Shanahan gave an important update on Brandon Meriweather and spoke about Trent William’s progression during the offseason.

Last night when the Denver Broncos soundly defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener, those who picked them in season predictions to make a deep playoff run were giving themselves pats on the back over and over again.

Has somebody checked Chris Cooley’s back this morning? Cooley, Redskins legend and current radio analyst on “The Drive with Cooley and Czabe” heard weekdays from 4-7 on ESPN980 along with “Cooley’s Corner” on game days, tweeted out his hand drawn playoff prediction featuring the Broncos and this team:

Storylines The Eagles Are Following

After the NFL season officially kicked off last night after a slight delay, the resounding sentiment at Redskins Park this morning is excitement. Despite still being three days away, the players are ready to defend their NFC East crown against an Eagles team that they swept last season by a combined score of 57-26.

Season opening games usually come with a bevy of storylines to follow as every team starts on even playing grounds, 0-0 and as optimistic as ever. While the season opening game isn’t an all-encompassing indicator for how the final 15 games will play out, it does at least give a sample of what a team has to offer.

As everyone saw last season during the Redskins’ 40-32 victory over the Saints, the offense was going to be elite and Alfred Morris was indeed the real deal. It was also evident that the secondary was going to encounter some struggles.

Anyway, Monday night’s game marks the 157th the Redskins and Eagles have tangled since 1934 when the Redskins squeaked out a 6-0 victory. Just as the team and Redskins fans are following several players and storylines closely, so are the Eagles.

Here’s what Philadelphia and national media outlets are saying before the game:
