Roster Change: Meet Perry Riley Jr.

Who knew that Washington Redskins linebacker No. 56 was living a lie?

It turns out that “Perry Riley” is not Perry Riley at all, at least not exactly. He is, in fact, “Perry Riley Jr.,” son of the original Perry Riley and father to Perry Riley III (or PR3, if you prefer).

Starting with Monday night’s contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, Perry Riley will wear a suffix’d No. 56 jersey as a way of honoring his very proud father.

Riley said there was no particular reason behind his timing; it was just something that needed to be done. Read more »

Ryan Kerrigan, Chip Kelly Meet Again

For Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, Monday will be the start of a new chapter in his life. Not only will he be entering FedExField for the first time in his career, it will mark the culmination of years of hard work to get to the NFL. Taking nothing away from his nearly pristine college resume, most coaches want to reach the pinnacle of the football world.

While the day will be chock full of many firsts, if he and Ryan Kerrigan cross paths either during pregame warmups, postgame handshakes or even a play near the Eagles sideline during the game, it won’t be the first time the two have partook in the same game .

Long before Kerrigan shook Roger Goodell’s hand after the announcement that he was selected by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL Draft and made getting a haircut a monthly priority, he was a unanimous All-American defensive end at Purdue University. It was there where he got an inside look at Kelly’s unorthodox offense—twice.

Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

Posted by Stephen Czarda on September 5, 2013 – 3:30 pm

He may look pretty calm right now, but Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is rearing up to play the Eagles for the seventh time since being hired in 2010.

In his six meetings against the Eagles so far , Shanahan is .500 and has seen the best and worst of moments come against the closest NFC East rival. If his team comes out victorious Monday night though, Shanahan will tie Tom Landry for the most season opening wins (16) since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

Anyway, here’s Mike Shanahan in his own words today about how some of his players on the mend are doing and how long he thinks it took his defense to fully transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme.

Coach’s Turn: Kyle Shanahan At The Mic

Posted by Stephen Czarda on September 5, 2013 – 3:16 pm

If there are two things the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles are known for that’s being longstanding NFC East rivals and having offenses with the potential to put points on the board in a hurry. While the Eagles failed to tap into that potential last season, scoring only 26 points against the Redskins, Robert Griffin III and Co. had no trouble clicking on all cylinders.

Remember what happened the last time the Eagles came to town?

That scoreboard operator couldn’t catch a bathroom break.

Having said that, this is a new year and the slate has been wiped clean. Hopefully though, the Redskins can duplicate that success in the 157th matchup between the two squads.

Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media this afternoon about his offense is preparing for the game and how Griffin III himself is doing before the start of his sophomore season.

Darryl Tapp ‘Quickly Jumped’ At Redskins

In a statement that doesn’t need any sort of letter grade added to it or a clarifying backstory, the Washington Redskins have one of the best linebacking corps in the National Football League.

While it might start at the top with the sage veteran in London Fletcher and returning Pro Bowler Brian Orakpo, it isn’t just the starting four linebackers that assemble such a talented group. As Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys know best with Rob Jackson, the burgundy and gold have talent across the board in the center of Jim Haslett’s 3-4 defensive scheme.

Jackson, Nick Barnett, Brandon Jenkins and Darryl Tapp form a quartet that sounds more like a starting four than backups, but that’s the kind of good problems the Redskins currently face.

For Tapp, Monday’s game serves more than just a Redskins debut for the eight-year veteran. It’s his first game against his employer of three years.

First Take On Redskins Power Rank

Posted by Stephen Czarda on September 5, 2013 – 12:28 pm

Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith are notoriously two of the more—verbose—sports analysts on the planet right now. The two combat each other on each and every subject in sport. Sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re wrong, but they are certainly never afraid to raise their voices to reach decibel levels louder than a moving jet to get their point across.

With the NFL season kicking off tonight preseason power rankings and season record predictions that have been floating around more than the leaves on the trees at Redskins Park on a blustery autumn day will be brought into the spotlight one final time.

Most preseason power rankings have had the Redskins somewhere around the 10-12 mark and that includes ESPN. Bayless took offense to that. Before you chalk up another interesting Bayless sound bite, he actually thinks that the Redskins ranking of 10th is–as his coworker would say—ridiculous.

Does third sound better?

Coach’s Turn: Jim Haslett At The Mic

Posted by Stephen Czarda on September 5, 2013 – 12:15 pm

One of the biggest storylines to follow in Monday night’s clash is going to be how Jim Haslett’s 3-4 defense, bolstered by a revamped secondary, will perform against an enigmatic Philadelphia Eagles offense.  While the Eagles still have the same pieces in place from Super Bowl or bust expectations two seasons ago, possibilities are abound with innovative college turned NFL head coach Chip Kelly.

In June, well before the team’s successful Richmond training camp experience that saw the team form an undeniable bond amongst each other, Haslett talked about the importance of his defensive core remaining intact.

“To me, the good defenses in the league, in the NFL, usually have been together for a while and they’ve played together.”

While his team has yet to play a meaningful game in terms of wins and losses, the defense shone brightest during the preseason, stonewalling seasoned running backs and minimalizing big players through the air. Part of that may be due to keeping the core of the unit for several years now and showing improvements from where they started when Haslett was hired in 2010.

Anyway, Haslett spoke to the media just a few minutes ago about combating the Eagles’ up-tempo offense. Here’s what he had to say:

In a little less than 11 hours, the 2013 NFL season will officially kick off when the Baltimore Ravens defend their Super Bowl crown against one of the Washington Redskins’ 2013 opponents—the Denver Broncos. More importantly for the millions of fantasy football owners out there, it means that the trash talking en route to a championship starts now.

If you were one of those smart drafters who took a Washington Redskin, here are final point projections for Week 1 [Note: these numbers are for standard scoring leagues]:
