Redskins–We Have A Bobsled Team

If you saw rather large men running down the streets with a bobsled this weekend in matching uniforms it may or may not have been the Washington Redskins. After all I’ve heard summer is the best time to practice for the Winter Olympics.

Sure it felt more like the middle of July than September, but as Derice, Sanka, Junior and Yul taught everyone in the mid 90’s, it doesn’t matter how high the mercury rises on the thermometer as long as you have your team.

So as the rest of the team wore various (and somewhat hideous) Hawaiian shirts to an island themed party, Josh LeRibeus, Adam Gettis, Kirk Cousins, Ryan Kerrigan and Tom Compton found some extremely large spandex body suits and paid homage to Cool Runnings.  Mon trust me when I say you’ll never see a pushcart team like this anywhere else.

Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

Hopefully all of you at home are enjoying your Labor Day relaxing with family and friends, getting that last trip to the community pool in and plan on grilling out tonight before the realization that cooler airs and frost covered windshields are closer than we think.

Want to know how the Washington Redskins celebrated Labor Day? By laboring on the practice fields at Redskins Park for over two hours in 90 degree weather. Yeah—its Eagles week and no–there are no days off until February.

Operation Patience for everyone is almost over.

Speaking of Operation Patience and the quarterback who coined the phrase (Robert Griffin III), the media unsurprisingly didn’t give head coach Mike Shanahan any time off from keeping them up-to-date on the quarterback’s progression. I’ll go ahead and share what Shanahan said right off the bat.

Here’s everything else that Shanahan had to say to starting with an announcement of team captains for Monday Night’s game:

Two-For-Two On Redskins’ Horizon?

In six days the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants will battle on Sunday Night Football, but more importantly, it’s only seven days until the Washington Redskins square off against Philadelphia Eagles in a special time slot (7:00 p.m.) on Monday Night Football.

The four NFC East teams playing in the two biggest games of the weekend in prime time is no surprise consider that–well this is the hardest division in football after all.

This division boasts the most history in the NFL by far with only the NFC North having at least some grounds for rebuttal, but even then the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings have a combined zero Super Bowl victories. And there are some divisions (AFC South and NFC South) that have won only one more Super Bowl that the Redskins have–combined.

The Redskins, who used to be the team of the south long before the inception of the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons among others,  are trying to become the first back-to-back NFC East division champ since the Eagles when they won four-straight from 2001-2004.

NFL on ESPN weighed in on how the NFC East will shake out.

Alfred Morris’ Unexpected Top 20 Rise

Nothing is more symbolic of the NFL’s uncertainty than the rise of second-year running back Alfred Morris. Revert back to one year ago today where Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said that his starting running back for the season opener against the New Orleans Saints was a “secret”.

Sure Morris had provided glimpses of a back that could run for somewhere around the 1,000-yard mark, but was the franchise really going to entrust a guy who wasn’t even expected to make the final 53-man roster? A blocking fullback prospect that started training camp fourth on the depth chart behind Roy Helu Jr., Evan Royster and Tim Hightower was really going to start in the same backfield as reigning Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III?

Fast forward 365 days later and there’s no question that Alfred Morris had one of the greatest, and unexpected, debuts in NFL history. When you’re mentioned in the same breath as Eric Dickerson and former greats like Terrell Davis hold their breath every time Morris touches the ball knowing something spectacular is going to happen, you know you are doing something right.

Throughout the offseason Morris’ placement on top [insert number here] lists has come into question, but there’s no denying that he’s one of the best players in the NFC East going into 2013. Dan Graziano, ESPN NFC East blogger, has Morris eighth on his top 20 players list.

Number Changes Part Of Busy Weekend

In case you missed it this weekend due to either being away at the beach making sandcastles for the last time in 2013 or were simply enjoying back-to-back gorgeous a lot happened during the weekend ranging from roster trimmings to filling out a practice squad with all familiar faces.

For four, they will also be seeing new numbers this morning at practice. For whatever reason, jersey numbers choices are always intriguing. Maybe it’s due to the next jersey purchase or rooting for that guy that has the same number you did growing up, but the changes are as follows:
