For the only time during training camp in Richmond, Washington Redskins general manager Bruce Allen spoke with the media about how training camp went just a few moments ago.

Allen, whose father George used to hold training camp in Carlisle, spoke about the influence of holding their annual three week camp away from home.

The general manager also touched on positively impacting the lives of kids, his thoughts of Robert Griffin III in Year Two and the future of the Washington Redskins home stadium after 2027 among other things. Here’s all that he had to say:

Quan Sturdivant Ready To Make Impact

Newest Washington Redskins linebacker Quan Sturdivant may not have gotten much of a chance to see Richmond, but he’s hoping to make an impact early.

“I think I can bring a lot, especially on defense and on special teams,” Sturdivant said yesterday after his firstr practice with the team. “I am versatile as a linebacker and the main thing is to come and compete in the games and make the team. Whatever they need me to do, I will go out there and do it.”

On Thursday, the Redskins announced the signing of Sturdivant after roster space became available due to the release of veteran Devery Henderson.

Originally selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, Sturdivant is joining a corps that boasts Pro Bowlers Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan and London Fletcher along with 2007 All-Pro Nick Barnett.

Sturdivant, who plays inside linebacker and is filling the hole currently vacated by Kennan Robinson being sidelined with a pectoral injury, was a 2008 Sports Illustrated All-American Honorable Mention. Obviously he’s no slouch.

In fact, the only reason why he wasn’t a first or second-team All-American was due to tough competition. Like the 2011 season where Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III took college football by storm, 2008 was dominated by elite linebacker play.

Aaron Curry, Brian Cushing and Brandon Spikes were first team while James Laurinaitis and Rey Maualuga were second team. All five men were selected within the first two rounds of the 2008 and 2009 NFL Drafts.

Anyway, here’s video from his days at the University of North Carolina:

Redskins Work Hard, Rivals Hit The Beach

While not quite as physically demanding as the first two weeks of training camp, the Redskins still grinded out seven practice sessions this week. The last three gave Richmond a sneak peak at how the team operates practices on a weekly basis during the regular season.

Since suffering a torn ACL and LCL against the Seahawks in January, Robert Griffin III’s used every possible outlet to let all know that he’s determined to not only come back during the first week of the season, but that he’s setting his personal standards bar higher in Year Two.

Wednesday’s debut in 11-on-11 drills was a symbol of his progress. To think that a star quarterback who gained 815 rushing yards in his rookie season is only a little over seven months removed from serious surgery that, for some, takes upwards of 12 months to fully recover from speaks volumes to his work ethic and pride to be one of the best ever.

The same can’t be said about our division rival Dallas Cowboys, though. Instead of punching the clock at another training camp practice, the Cowboys decided to take their festivities elsewhere.
