VIDEO: Kirk Cousins Google+ Hangout

There’s an old saying in football that the backup quarterback is the most popular player in town. While Kirk Cousins has just a tiny bit of competition for that title with Robert Griffin III, he is now doubt reaching rock star status in the DMV (and Richmond).

It doesn’t hurt that on top of his accurate right arm and regrown golden locks, he’s a great guy who loves Redskins Nation.

While he gets swarmed by local and national media on a daily basis, Cousins had the opportunity to chat in a pretty informal setting with a few of Redskins diehards as part of the team’s second Google+ Hangout of the 2013 season.

From his transition from Michigan State to his thoughts on Year Two with the Redskins and even a much needed explanation for his touchdown celebration with Tom Compton, here’s what Cousins had to say:

Coach’s Turn: Mike Shanahan At The Mic

You can’t win two Super Bowls if you aren’t willing to put in the extra time necessary to create a great football team.

That’s why after Saturday’s 30 minute tropical storm cancelled training camp 2013 Day 13, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan has decided to add an extra morning practice session tomorrow at 10 a.m.

So if you haven’t heard the news yet due to another slate of boring Monday meetings now you know. Rejoice!

Anyway, Shanahan stepped out of the heat just a few minutes ago and talked to the media about a variety of topics, with the main point on the agenda was Robert Griffin III. Shocker.

Here’s what he had to say:

Practice Happenings From Day 13

While it was only four days since the Washington Redskins took the field together as a team, it’s felt like an eternity for training camp standards. In a sense, it was the offseason all over again.

I’ll go ahead and be the spokesman for all Redskins fans out there in saying it was way too long of a halt from action, although my hands didn’t mind the opportunity at a break.

Anyway, after a heart stopping 22-21 victory over the Tennessee Titans, the players rejoined the Richmond faithful as the preparations began for the Steelers. Despite playing in the AFC and only being a preseason game, there’s almost a regular season game feel to their Monday Night Football matchup.

As we patiently await Robert Griffin III’s debut in 11-on-11 drills, he proved today that he can’t be stopped in 7-on-7 drills.

VIDEO: Running Backs Remain Smooth

Running backs Keiland Williams, Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster combined for 29 carries and 130 yards on Thursday and really looked smooth in the process. While they didn’t produce any home runs, they had no problem moving the chains.

Here’s how the three looked during today’s practice along with incumbent starting tailback Alfred Morris:

VIDEO: Moss Flashes Fundamentals

Thursday’s game really brought out the best of the wide receivers’ collective athleticism highlighted by a Leonard Hankerson fish out of water like dive and a Logan Paulsen one-handed grab in heavy traffic. While both plays were certainly worthy of top 10 honors, the team did drop a few easy catches as well.

Instead of a simulated dunk contest, the receiving corps worked on simply fundamentals.

Who better in the world to show you just that than Santana Moss?

VIDEO: Jarvis Jenkins Pounds The Sled

I guess the icy cool conditions have continued today if you consider 94 degrees as chilly. Then again if you’re any normal human being, you might consider today hot. Might.

Anyway, it’s been six days since the last practice so it only seems right to open today’s video series with an inside look at the defensive line working on their footwork and pounding the sled.

As you’ll see starting at the 1:41  mark of this clip, I’m thankful that I was able to stand to the side of Jarvis Jenkins as he knocked the sleds around with relative ease.

Be Nicer To Hobbits, Stephen Bowen

By nature of his position, Redskins defensive lineman/captain Stephen Bowen is one of the more outspoken players on the team.

The seven-year veteran has started every game for the Redskins since signing here on July 29th, 2011 and isn’t shy to let anyone know his thoughts ranging from his former employer (the Dallas Cowboys) to Hobbits.

Yes the hairy little guys (who are apparently our relatives) made most famous for keeping the One Ring away from Sauron. Okay so maybe my inner Lord of the Rings nerd is coming out, but you get the point. He’s more than just football.

I asked Bowen to give me his best TMZ investigative reporter impression and give a lowdown on top pop culture events through word association. Trust me when I say the guy is one of the sharpest on the team.

Redskins Stay Active Even On The Road

By the time the Washington Redskins touched down in Nashville last Wednesday before the first preseason game of the season, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation had already completed two events in the city of Richmond.

Despite the fact that the Redskins travel at least ten times a year during their preseason and regular season schedule, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation never stops their hard work back home helping the youth of the greater community.

Training camp 2013 in Richmond has been no different.

Since the last practice on Tuesday, the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation held five events with the first being a Play 60 mini combine at University of Richmond’s Robins Stadium.

Player’s Turn: Robert Griffin III At The Mic

“R-G-III, R-G-III”, you can bet you’ll hear the chant each time No. 10 takes the field not only here in Richmond, but during the regular season at FedexField, the Superdome and Cowboys Stadium as well.

While the media has yet to break out in unison when Robert Griffin III steps into his weekly press conference (again..yet), they did asked him another round of hard hitting questions.

Ranging from his new haircut to getting more repetitions during drills, here’s a shortened version of all that the reigning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year had to say via the Redskins Twitter account (@Redskins).

Up first, video of Griffin III’s “new” look.

Results In For Offensive/Defensive MVP

Posted by Stephen Czarda on August 12, 2013 – 9:47 am

It’s not like I need to tell you because I’m sure you’ll be going to the grocery store later this week to grab those necessary tailgating items, but the Redskins’ first home game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers is one week from today!

And for those of you who can’t make it to the stadium due to travel, work or whatever else is in your jam packed daily schedule—the game will be ESPN’s Monday Night Football premiere.

Unlike last season’s regular season bout, let’s hope the Steelers don’t pack those bumble bee style unis in their suitcases—my phone’s camera, and probably yours, can’t handle it.

Anyway, after the Redskins’ 22-21 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday night I asked you your thoughts on the offensive and defensive MVPs.

In a margin even closer than the one point victory, Pat White and Kirk Cousins dueled for the right of Redskins Blog Offensive MVP.

Thanks to a late touchdown scamper right up the heart of the Titans defense and a subsequent two-point conversion, White just barely edged out Cousins.

Here’s how close it was:
