Just walking around training camp over the last two days, I’ve realized that every single Redskins fan has truly amazing stories to share. Whether it’s about the first game they ever attended or their thoughts on the 2013 squad, everyone has been friendly and walks around with a smiling face.
They don’t hide their Redskins passion, making sure that anyone outside the gates of the Bon Secours Training Center knows where their allegiance stands.
Over the next few weeks, thousands of people will rejoice their annual day of birth with the traditional cake and candles, but for one lucky girl, she celebrated her birthday in style—being up close to the Washington Redskins, getting countless autographs and having one very special day that will never be forgotten.
The Waldron family woke up bright and early today in their home city of Baltimore and traveled down I-95 to surprise Maggie with an unforgettable birthday getaway.
“We’re just down for the day, its Maggie’s ninth birthday today,” father Matthew said. “We’re all big Redskins fans. Maggie’s a very big Redskins fan and so we thought ‘why not.’ We’ve got the new [training camp] spot so why not. [And] here we are.”
Mother Genevra, wanting to surprise her daughter, called the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation last week to see if there was anything the team could do for her daughter’s special day.
“I called Redskins Park earlier in the week and said ‘we’re planning on coming down, is there anything you guys can do it’s my daughter’s ninth birthday’, and this nice woman I talked to on the phone said ‘let me call you back.’”
Well she called me back the next day and said ‘we’ve got great news; you’ve got VIP tickets.’ They put together fun packs for the girls and it was easy. It was great, everyone was very welcoming.”
At the end of practice, the players quickly took to the sidelines to chat with admiring fans excited about them signing their paraphernalia. Despite surrounding fans being twice their size, the players spotted the birthday girl and her two sisters (Lucy and Molly) first.
With pictures and autographs in hand, Lucy said it was the best birthday she’s ever had.
Matthew echoed his daughter’s sentiment.
“It’s been a great experience.”
Thank you for letting us be your birthday destination, Maggie! We hope to see you and the rest of your family at FedExField this season.
