You feel that heart of yours beating inside your chest this morning?
No, that isn’t because you’re excited to head back to work this week, it’s because you know Washington Redskins training camp opens this week!
As we descend onto Richmond, Va., NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal will be keeping the pulse of one position in particular going into camp—tight end.
Over the weekend the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys kicked off training camp season when the doors opened to their facilities to rookies and veterans alike with position fights of their own to worry about, but Rosenthal’s keeping an eye on the “battle royale” for starting tight end here.
“Not to be confused with the Redskins‘ gnarly-looking safety free-for-all, the tight end group features Fred Davis,Niles Paul, Logan Paulsen and rookie Jordan Reed all angling for Mike Shanahan‘s affection.”
Gnarly could be replaced by the similar defining word hairy to describe the tight end situation, but with Logan Paulsen’s cheeks seeing the light of day (and the ridiculous summer heat) once again we’ll just say competitive competition.
Anyway, Davis appears to have the inside edge despite spending most of the season on the sidelines due to injury, but don’t just assume the other three have succumbed so early in the race.
Paulsen far-exceeded expectations in the latter half of the season in replacement duty, Paul had a second full offseason to familiarize himself with the position and Reed is, perhaps, the biggest wildcard on the entire offense.
Wrestling diehards wouldn’t consider a “battle royale” to be much of a good thing, but Redskins fans do not fret—this is a very good problem to have.
Rosenthal has one man in particular that he is going to be keeping a keen eye on and how could you not if you’re a Twitter fan and follow him.
“Don’t underestimate Paul.”
With the Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles looming who do YOU have penciled in to start?
