In the modern NFL era players attempt to individualize their looks with menacing facemasks, specialized arm sleeves and visors, but when it comes down to it no matter if you’re the star quarterback (Robert Griffin III) or the punter, everyone wears the same uniform on game days.
Over on NFL.com Dave Dameshek has lined up 32 of the greatest throwback unis and all 32 modern day getups for the right at having the honor of “The Greatest Uniform in NFL History”.
The Washington Redskins, who are also affectionately known as the Burgundy and Gold by this rabid fan base, are seeded as follows:
Up first on the NFC throwback portion of the bracket at the fifth seed is the fierce, spear helmeted combination that the team wore from 1965-1968.
Behind the potent duo of Sonny Jurgensen and Charley Taylor raking up touchdowns at will and Brig Owens, Paul Krause and Chris Hanburger terrorizing opposing offenses, this uniform combination became a hit in our Nation’s Capital—so much so that it was the inspiration behind the team’s pretty awesome 70th anniversary uniforms sported here by one Darrell Green.
The darker burgundy and gold unis are squaring off against the 12th seeded Detroit Lions blue and silver uniforms from 1934-1937. Well I’m guessing blue and silver– the world was black and white back then, right?
On the contemporary side of the uniform bracket is the second-seeded, sleek and trendy Nike uniforms that Griffin III and company wore during last year’s NFC East title run.
Just a few weeks back, I asked Redskins Nation what their favorite uniform combination was and the burgundy top, gold pants combination took home more than half the vote.
Yes burgundy not red as it is described in the uniform’s promotional video.
Anyways, the Redskins will be going up against the 15th seeded Atlanta Falcons red jerseys (which they will probably wear in the two 2012 division champions matchup in in Week 15 later this year).
Barring a Florida Gulf Coast like Cinderella run (everyone likes an underdog but not in this case) the Redskins should breeze through this matchup.
If they do—chances are they may be seeing the Cowboys come round two.
Click here to choose both Redskins uniform combos—first round voting ends July 5th at 5pm.
It’s all in the looks these days–well at least for this bracket.
