Last Thursday Tyler’s Kids Outreach (TKO) and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation teamed up to give a group of local kids the chance to hang out at Redskins Park and spend the day with some of the players for “Extreme Recess”.
TKO was created by offensive lineman Tyler Polumbus and wife Liz to “enrich the lives of children through family, faith and personal growth.”
While dark clouds blanketed the skies throughout the duration of the recess, the gloomy conditions didn’t stop the kids from having the time of their lives with the Washington Redskins.
For guys like offensive lineman Xavier Nixon, they grew up idolizing NFL players dreaming of the days that they could simply meet just one of them—but how about 15 at one time doing the same drills performed during a normal NFL practice session?
“They look up to guys like us on TV,” Nixon said. “They love to see us play on Sundays, and to actually be here and be a part of their day is a great experience.”
One of the play stations set up at recess was blocking drills with offensive lineman Chris Chester.
Now normally Chester is on the other side of the pad, so when he was getting knocked around by some future lineman he admitted that he may want to change his training regimen before heading to Richmond.
“Some of [them] were pushing me around a little bit,” Chester stated. “I’ve been out there reevaluating my offseason program because there were some strong kids out there.”
As the expected rain continued to steer clear of Redskins Park, it became obvious that the kids wouldn’t be erasing their experiences with the Washington Redskins from their memory banks anytime soon.
“You can see it in their eyes. You can hear it in their laughter,” TKO’s Dawn Ritz said about the positive atmosphere the attendees were experiencing. “You can feel it in the high five’s and the hugs they give to you. It’s just the most amazing feeling. This day is all about ‘You can do it’.
It’s amazing that Tyler [had] 14 or 15 of his teammates out to support him. It just shows that it’s something that near and dear to the Redskins’ heart and that they’re really on board with supporting him and his work with the kids.”
