Last Thursday Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan cancelled the scheduled final day of minicamp and gave his players an extra day of “summer vacation”.
Not every player, though.
For rookies Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas—well they started off their first day away from organized team activities chatting with a handful of local media members and one lucky fan about their experiences not only since being drafted two months ago, but they’re backgrounds beyond the Washington Redskins.
For any rookie it is a dream come true to be drafted into the National Football League, but when you’re selected by your favorite team it’s a whole different ballgame.
Despite growing up thousands of miles away in Fresno, California, Thomas was a diehard burgundy and gold fan.
“Growing up, this was my favorite team. I always rooted for the Redskins.”
Despite the fact that four different franchises (the now St. Louis Rams count) have called The Golden State home since Thomas was born, his allegiance to our Nation’s Capital’s team has remained unwavered—and yes that includes this past season.
“I’ve been a Redskins fan as long as I can remember. This past year at Fresno [State University], the Redskins gave me a lot to brag about to my teammates and their teams.”
I asked the 2012 NCAA interceptions leader where his family was from because my intrigue level rose just by the simple fact that he had several different teams in his home state to choose from. Maybe some of his family could be located in the DMV.
As I found out, though, he
is was a lone wolf in his family in terms of Redskins fandom.
“My whole family is from Dallas and Houston.”
We won’t even go there.
Hail to the Redskins!
