For decades football facemasks remained relatively conformed in terms of the position that you played. Often, offensive lineman wore full facemasks to protect their eyes while running backs would sport a sleeker two bar look to complement their position duties (you wouldn’t want a view of bars blocking your vision).
Nowadays though with the NFL’s increased awareness on ensuring the safest game possible game, players are sporting quite the elaborate facemasks regardless of where they line up on the field.
NFL.com released a gallery of the “wildest facemasks” in the league and per the norm a Redskin is found.
For reasons unknown, No. 72 does not appear on the list but Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware’s noggin protector made the cut (despite the obvious similarity).
Don’t worry, however, as Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Theismann makes a cameo—yes the same Joe Theismann who wore a single bar helmet during his heyday.
Some of you out there may be wondering what happened to the look Theismann helped make famous (he was the last non-kicker/punter to have “one”) as it hasn’t been seen on a burgundy and gold helmet for years.
The answer: it was banned throughout the NFL in 2004.
Anyways if your still hankering to look at football helmets and facemasks, check out this gallery of the top-12 plays made last year by players with a visor (more on that here) and be sure to tune into the blog during training camp as it is almost guaranteed that we’ll see a few new looks from the Redskins in 2013.
Hail to the Redskins!
