2012 WAS-DAL Rivalry: Unsung Heroes

In continuing our mini-series on the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry, let’s take a look at a few of 2012s unsung heroes, players that had big performances but may not have grabbed the spotlight so to speak.

As you know, the team was 2-0 versus Dallas this season which included a captivating, edge-of-your-seat ‘W’ on Thanksgiving Day and a division-clinching victory at home in the final week of the season.

The six players listed below are a few guys who may not necessarily be the ‘talk of the town’ but players who we think definitely deserve some recognition for their clutch performances.

Mike Ditka Speaks On All Things Redskins

On Wednesday, Washington Redskins legend Joe Gibbs was back at Redskins Park for the annual luncheon for his foundation, Youth For Tomorrow. Gibbs was joined by current head coach Mike Shanahan and former coaching fraternity brother and friend Mike Ditka.

When Gibbs first put on his signature burgundy Redskins snapback as the lead man in our Nation’s Capital, few knew who he was. Even Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke admitted that he wasn’t sure what Gibbs brought to the table.

After the Hall of Fame coach failed to get a victory in his first month with the Burgundy and Gold, questions about the offensive guru’s longevity were popping up left and right.

However, Gibbs put those questions to rest just one year later when he led the Redskins to their first of three Lombardi Trophies. Washington steamrolled through their regular season schedule with ease and missed a perfect record by two touchdowns.

Luckily for Ditka, he avoided Washington’s reign of dominance for the most part– well sort of.

Someone forgot to mention to him that Darrell Green was that good.

Best Redskins Rivalry: How YOU Voted

The Redskins have a storied history consisting of big games, historic victories, nail biting finishes and heart-rending losses. Couple those raw emotions with the competitive nature of the NFC East and division rivalries are abounding for the team from the Nation’s Capital.

We even failed to mention our purple neighbors to the North.

Yesterday, the blog touched on Russell Baxter’s (of Bleacher Report) ‘12 Best Rivalries in the NFL Today’ who ranked the Redskins-Dallas rivalry his No. 5 rivalry in the NFL.

So we decided to pose the question, ‘Who do you think is the Redskins biggest rival?’ Well, what it all boiled down to is a consensus animosity for the long-time ‘thorn in our side’ Dallas Cowboys.
